On the morning of July 4, 2015, Officers in Quincy observed from shore three men taking striped bass and shellfish from the contaminated tidal flats.
When the men left the flats on their motorboat, other Officers, waiting offshore on a patrol boat, intercepted them in the waters of Boston near the remains of the Long Island Bridge. After stopping the motorboat, Officers inspected the men?s fishing permits, gear, vessel and catch.
The men had been observed harvesting, and were... caught in possession of, seven striped bass, only one of which was legally sized. The men also had one hundred and sixty-two oysters, fifty-six razor clams, one soft shell clam, and one quahog. The vessel was found to be not registered.
The suspects, who do not have any history of marine fisheries offenses, are being charged with civil violations of the marine fisheries laws resulting in over fifteen hundred dollars in fines. In addition, their motorboat has been seized and is in the process of being libeled, a civil process in which the Commonwealth seeks to have the vessel forfeited for violations of fisheries laws.
