Fin knew him, I didn't. He was one of the old-timers we talk about often. The ones who blazed the trails, forged new ways of catching fish, and learned to fish by doing.
When these folks first started, there was no internet. You got out and did it, without endless internet discussions. You either succeeded or failed. If you failed you went out and did it again, until you got an edge or discovered a better way to catch and present to fish.
It was a never ending process. One that led the most motivated fishermen to not only fishing success, but also in their lives. This generation was tough, and a group I always looked up to.
Following are a few words Al Ristori had to say about Bob Taciak.
Finchaser may have some pics to post of Bob's biggest fish. He texted us one of Bob with Big Al Wutowski with a giant tuna as their catch. I'm hoping he can post that when he gets a chance.
If anyone knew him or has anything else to post, feel free.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Thoughts and prayers for eternal peace. May God shine his Everlasting Light on you and your grieving family. You will be missed. Amen.
I was casting for peacock bass from the shore of a Florida lake yesterday evening when Nick Cicero of Folsom called with the sad news that his former fishing partner and one of the Shore's great fishermen, Rhino, had passed away Sunday at his home in Sebastian, Fl. at 74.
Robert Taciak was known simply as Rhino to the hard-fishing pros of the Shore, especially those chasing giant tuna when that was a major attraction in the Mud Hole. Though born in Perth Amboy, Rhino lived in Point Pleasant before making the move to Sebastian.
He served in the Army during the Vietnam War, and was retired from PSE&G
A visitation is scheduled for Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at Strunk Funeral Home in Sebastian, followed by a prayer service there at 3. A guest book is posted at
