"According to The New York Times, S?o Tom? and Pr?ncipe’s attorney general found that the Nigerian company the ship was registered to did not exist, and the Chilean government had suspended the Thunder captain’s fishing license more than a year ago.

Evidence gathered by Sea Shepherd before the boat sank led Interpol to investigate companies in Spain, where the ship’s real owners are thought to be based."

amazing when you think to what level of deception these scumbags will go to.

A boat that big has to cost at least one million dollars. They sunk it so they didn't get busted. That tells you the amount of money to be made from illegal fishing must be tons more than that. Mind boggling. Thanks for posting.

Speechless. You know they are never going to collect that 17 million. As good a chance of that happening as fining the illegals who fish the inlets and dont speak inglis!

The coasts of Africa and the southern hemisphere are so vast they all can't be patrolled. It is a virtual cash machine for these poachers because of the intermittent enforcement. When you read about some of these folks getting caught it is a drop in the bucket to stem the flow of illegal fish. That's one of the reasons why they are willing to scuttle a boat that big. As mentioned the profits are enormous..
