From another site, a good reminder to check that you have all your safety gear before going out. Thoughts and prayers to his family:

An Oceanside man was found floating in the waters off Long Beach half a mile away from his boat and was pronounced dead a short time later, police and Coast Guard officials said.

Edel Lorenzo, 64, was discovered in the water at about 6 p.m. Saturday by police and Coast Guard searchers a few hours after another boater found his 18-foot fishing boat unoccupied with a wallet and a fishing pole inside, authorities said.

The boater called the Coast Guard shortly after finding the boat. Rescue crews searched the waters near where the boat was found south of Long Beach about 4 miles west of Jones Inlet, said Coast Guard search and rescue specialist Mark Averill.

Family and friends told authorities Lorenzo had gone fishing. The boat was registered to Lorenzo, police said. After investigating, authorities said, they determined Lorenzo had been seen last around 11 a.m. Saturday at a boatyard on Brower Avenue in Oceanside, where his car was parked.

See what's going on in and around your area >> As a police boat towed Lorenzo's boat back to Station Jones Beach, other police and Coast Guard boat crews and helicopters searched the area for Lorenzo.

At 5:56 p.m., authorities found Lorenzo's body in the water, a half mile away from the boat, police said. Lorenzo was not wearing a life vest when he was pulled from the water, Averill said.

An ambulance technician pronounced Lorenzo dead at 6:52 p.m., police said.

We all think that we now everything when it comes to putting dinner on the table. Take a moment at think about this family as they have lost someone close to them on a day that was to be good day of fishing. Be safe on you next trip check all you gear and make sure it is still in date.

Prayers to family.

There have also been 3 swimmers who died and hundreds rescued this past weekend due to Bertha. Everyone should be doing a double take on safety.
