Tried to see if I can get something going yesterday on the incoming tide late afternoon. Thought I would shift things up a little bit. fish my usual area after the tourists had left, and managed two short stripers on bucktail and red gill teaser. The wind had shifted slightly East and there was a little bit of a chop to the water. good luck out there this weekend folks I'm off from fishing until Tuesday.

June and Early Summer Recap......

Bunker are still on the radar for anyone targeting big bass.
Sadly many of the fishermen I know have given up fishing for Jersey bass at this time of year....
There are still a few bass and larger bluefish around here and there.

My June fishing was fairly consistent, often being able to pick up a few bass on each trip. There was a lot of effort and lost sleep necessary to do that though.
These bunker are both a blessing and a curse. They seem to concentrate all the fish in one area, around them.

There are a few encouraging signs out there:

1. Fluking by most standards has been pretty good for anyone putting in some time, from the shore and boats.
2. Each trip I take I don't even begin fishing until I scout the area and the forage varieties for a good 5 minutes. I am seeing more varieties of juvenile fish this year than I have seen in many years. I think... fingers crossed, this bodes well for what could be a spectacular fall season for many of us.

In the meantime, if you're out there on the water on a boat, or just fishing some isolated area at night from land...in bad weather... please be careful and safe. God Bless all.

Oops you're right. I should have disclosed that I'm now carrying a 55 gallon bunker tank around with me whenever I fish.

That's the only way to catch bass now...
plugs, tins, bucktails, rubber.....none of that works.

Well I'm not so sure about that. I fished near Island beach early this morning between 5 and 6 a.m. before the shoobie traffic started.
I saw a bunch of bunker out far and it seemed like nothing was on them. Casted a bunch of stuff and ended up tossing a pencil popper right around sunrise. Raised one pretty decent-sized fish on that but it never came back. Maybe was a striper or a blue but I'll never know. Good luck and happy Fourth of July guys!

I agree with you gents that's why I completely stop fishing for the whole weekend. It's not worth the aggravation trying to get some fishing in the disrespectful folks are here. Trash all over, urinating in the streets, and just a general sense of foul mouth loud behavior. You can have it.

I'm now using the bucktail and redgill combo every day. Did pick up two short flukeon the redgill. Great morning to be on the water early. Gonna be a hot one today folks.

Late report from July 1st (I blame DarkSkies for not having the thread up yet...)
Decent night of bass fishing with Rui although not as fast paced as we have been experiencing recently still a very solid night considering its JULY and water temps are 71-73F where we have been fishing. We had 6 bass total with 3 being shorts, one just keeper sized around 30", another one around 16-18lbs and then a skinny 45.5" bass that pulled the boga down to 32#. All bass released safely!

Tough fishing on Saturday we only managed 4 keeper fluke and about two dozen shorts with the fast drift we had. I was expecting much better action.

Sunday we had much better conditions I knew the bay would be super crowded on a holiday weekend so we opted to go out front and do some bottom fishing. Good conditions all morning with a very light wind. Kevin and I got our sea bass limits fairly quickly releasing a few smaller sized keepers and a bunch of out of season blackfish. We then switched over to ling for the rest of the morning and ended up with half a bucket of ling each.

It would almost be like winning the lottery to catch stripers 2 days in a row in the New Jersey summer surf without using something like sand crabs or peelers / shedders.
I have been pulling up a lot of mole crabs with the bucktail lately so I know the bass are feeding on them. I got nothing but the skunk this morning. Relatively strong East wind, dirty water, not a great combination. might try again on Monday

Thanks for the heads up. you know what they say you can't catch them from the couch. I did one of those marathon trips yesterday that you guys always talk about. Fished moco with gulp white curly tails. Bunch of weeds in the water. There were a lot of fluke and a lot of sea robbins as well. One keeper it was pretty fat. And a whole mess of shorts. The family came down and we went out to Long Branch for dinner. Then I was back out last night trying for blues or stripers. Got a few cocktail blues on poppers right around sunset. no luck with the stripers at all, and I quit when the torrential monsoon rains soaked me to the
bone.

Refreshing to hear I'm not the only one who had trouble with the weeds yesterterday. The surf was also big and it was pretty tough for me. I don't know about you other guys. managed 5 short fluke, and a lot of weeds. My next time out is this week so I hope it will be better by then.

Fished the first ever King of the Creek Fluke Tournament out of Morgan Creek on Saturday with Kevin Kolovich and Jorge Pardal. Tough conditions all day long with high winds and rain but we managed to get 8 keepers on the day. Our three biggest fish were 7lb, 5lb and 4lbs for a combined weight of 16.13lbs which was enough to take 3rd place. Great tournament and we will be back next year for sure.

Fished OC above Island Beach yesterday right after the rain. When it was raining I went and got myself a cheesesteak on the boardwalk and thought about the times when I came there when I was a little kid. after the rain almost everyone was gone so it was very peaceful fishing the only companions I had with the weed you guys are talking about. They are really terrible this year. I thought it was exaggerated but they are everywhere. I guess all seasons have there bad guys, last year it was the jellyfish. This year it's the weeds.
Just have to suck it up and keep trying, or find someone who has a boat.

The small ones never stand still for a picture because they get to the boat so fast and are still green.

Went porgy fishing yesterday afternoon with Ken and Rui and decided to stay inside the bay. We had decent action but unfortunately most were shorts - total was 19 keeper porgies. Switched over to fluke for a little while and picked through the shorts where Rui got a nice keeper before we called it a day. Also got a huge sea robin which will fry up nice!

I got my third personal fluke limit+ of the year and the first full boat limit of fluke on the year and the best part is we were back at the dock before 11am on a scorching HOT day. Fluke fished yesterday with Bill, my brother and my dad. We had to pick through a lot of shorts and 17-17.99" fish to put 14 keepers in the boat. I got my fourth and I guess you could say 5th personal fluke limit of the year as I had a double limit (10 keepers on the day). Good to see some positivity.
As for me, add me to the skunk control this morning. Conditions were good but I couldn't find a striper. Did see a bunch of cownose rays. Less than a handful all year long (knock on wood). I have certainly had my share of slower trips and the classic "should have been here yesterday" although I am usually the one saying it.

Got skunked Thursday on a tuna trip.....long story short problem with the electronics so fishing blind with no sonar. Had one nice hit felt like a good Bluefin but hook pulled half way into the fight.

Fished the SI Tuna club's Grandpa Savino fluke tournament on Saturday with Khanh, Dani, and Jay aboard the Sea Note II. I believe we finished in 5th place which was out of the money. One more quality fluke would have put us in the money or possibly won it. We put together a great catch in terrible conditions easily getting a 4 man fluke limit (plus another rogue sea bass) but not the right 3 fluke unfortunately.http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=20400&stc=1

Well, you win some you lose some. Tuna fishing can be expensive, and sometimes it's only a boat ride. Better luck next time.
I have been catching small Blues in the surf between the hours of after work and sunset. Anywhere from brick down to mid island ibsp.
small metals are working. There is a lot of bait in the surf spearing and, and rainfish.. Thats probably why.

Finally have a decent fishing report. I was fishing yesterday before the rain started Cape May area. Got a few short summer flounders on a hi-low gulp shrimp rig. then towards the end of the tide, I got two weakfish. the hit the bottom rig, and were much shorter than yours only about 13 inches each. You guys did better than me. I tried to fish yesterday in between the storms and it was terrible. I got about 15 minutes of clear weather, Then the black clouds rolled in and the thunder and lightning boomers. I said the heck with that I'm not getting fried like a french fry. A lot of sharks and rays around according to few fishermen I ran into. Be careful out there with those lightning boomers. I saw a few that were really scary.
