I've been a little absent from Stripers & Anglers this fall...not for a lack of fishing but time!

A bunch of recap along with some pictures that were never released at the time.

Yes, we killed a lot of porgies/fluke but 95%+ of the stripers were released unharmed.

A sincere thank you to everyone who fished with me for all the good times and memories! Just too many people to list and I do not want to risk leaving anyone out.

Happy New Year!

Good day on the ice this morning in the rain. Plenty of bass and pickerel to go around. Easily 30+ flags on the day.

Nice JB...As always!! Started 2017 off right hit some rocks on 1/1 and managed 4 lil guys about 16in or so and dropped 1 by the rocks that might have stretched to 20in all on a white Zoom paddle tail on a 1/2 jighead...Happy New Year boys here's to a great season in 17!!!

Nice job JB. Thank you for starting the thread as well, have been a little busy lately. Remember folks, fishing in many states for striped bass is closed in the back bay areas.

*(But it is not closed in all states.)
Always happy to see people catching and enjoying the outdoors, rather than in front of a TV screen. Good luck and best wishes to all.

Never tried eating any freshwater fish other than lake salmon. I hear pickerel are bony.

We got plenty of safe ice on the small ponds. I've been fishing this one pond that has had 5"+ since the first day we tried it on 12/26.

Going to give it a shot tomorrow I'll let you guys know.

Still got ice?

J Barbosa
02-07-2017, 09:58 PM
Still got ice?

Fished a small ice tournament this Saturday on a private lake w/my brother. Ice was 3-6" depending on the area. Spots with more sun exposure were around 3" and the shaded areas were a good 6" or better. This rain and warm weather will destroy what little ice was left...

We had good fishing for about 10 minutes and then the action completely shut down (I believe too much pressure on a small lake). In the first few minutes we had this small bass which is the only fish I had time to take a picture of (wanted to get them weighed in and released asap).

We also got another small bass, and a bigger one that weighed in at 2.8lbs, three pickerel and one crappie.

Between the two of us we ended up in third place in 3 out of 4 categories. Now if only 3rd place had a prize! LOL

3rd Place bass
3rd Place pickeral
3rd Place other "crappie"

1st place bass was a beautiful 4.7lber and second was 3.0lbs.

What a great day to take advantage of what will probably be the last day of ice fishing in New Jersey this season.

Lots of quality bass and pickerel today and one crappie just to keep things interesting.

It was hard to limit it down to just 20 pictures.

I can get use to ice fishing in 60 degree weather!

Gee who pis*ed in your cornflakes to make you so negative about boats? Boating is a multi billion dollar industry. Boating and fishing bring hundreds of millions of dollars into New Jersey's economy. There's nothing wrong with a day on the water and catching a few nice fish for grilling, from a boat. What's the beef dude? :plastered:

25 lbs IS a cow for most of the newbies. I had a good time one day last fall and caught a few in the 25 pound class. No big deal they were nice fish but I have seen bigger. 3 young guys came up to me
and said "man you are really catching the cows today!" Sad times - they don't remember when the big fish used to be everywhere, even within casting range.

will the real JB please stand up?

Funny stuff. not trying to pile on either, did notice that the dude in orange looks a little bit like a poster on the post office wall. JB that's not you, right?
Great reports. x2 what fnm said, nice to see some fish caught in legal waters. The PP has been way too crowded this winter.

I'm sorry he finally revealed himself. Next ..........someone will be placing a GPS tracker on his vehicle and following him, instead of finding fish on their own..........Similar to when Rich Swiss and crew got so inundated by people asking for early season spots and following them......they went a bit underground.........

I had an idea a while ago, But have been too busy to post.....

North winds have been howling all day. A few days ago I was thinking of fishing but no way no how until it gets warmer. Kudos for the reports gents. I know the striped bass are starting to stir.

I used to say that about boat fish. Those big tuna definitely do count. How else could you catch them? Nice job JB

I keep my fish fillets, clams and beer in a refrigerator in the garage.
Saves a lot of hassles and stress with the old lady.

Good job. If you don't want them to freeze you can always have a winter clambake.

Jb you are crazy to be out there clamming in 28-degree weather. How many layers did you have on?

Also wanted to say I think this cold snap will shut the stripers down.
They have 60 degree weather tomorrow, and then snow forecast this weekend, that's nuts.

Yesterday was too nice out not to wet a line. Fished out front Moco, my usual area. one hour after high tide. picked up a few small ones with a light bucktail. Nice time on the water.

Last night in the back. 1st 2 hrs of outgoing tide. Got the skunk. Saw a few tiny stripers caught on worms. It seemed like the water temperature dropped a few degrees. Hooray March.

What's with the lack of fishing reports from you guys? Grumpy's reports they're selling tons of worms. Someone please go out there and catch and let me know when the fishing's good. Meanwhile I'll keep watching reruns of Breaking Bad.:moon:

I read that on Grumpy's as well. It's probably all those power plant fish.

Took advantage of a perfect afternoon yesterday and fished oceanside. Bucktail tipped with small white curly grub. Nada. The walk out there was refreshing though. Just need the water to warm up a little bit more

I heard they put up new no trespassing signs two days ago on the "legal" side where guys like to fish.

I won't drive two hours to catch rats so I could care less but goes to show you guys **** everything up for others.

03-22-2017, 12:06 PM
Yes they did. It's a damn shame. It's nothing new. every year a small group idiots f*** it up. Then the police start enforcing the no trespassing. Then by the end of the year everyone forgets because facebook fishermen don't want to fish in the cold. Then in the spring it starts up all over again. Vicious cycle.

Gave it a try today for an hour in Moco. There were a lot of guys out in different places but I didn't see much going on. Heard of a few tiny stripers caught on blood worms and that was it. Zilch for me.
It was still good to get out there anyway.

Hook is right!! Got out yesterday..Have no confidence in the back right now still think it needs some warming up and steady Temps to get good..So I hit the front and jumped on some rocks..Great looking water, perfect clean white BT water..NE was blowing good but fishable..Fished from 12-3pm..Lil guys were still there like they have been all winter... ended my day with 20+ healthy schoolies most 16-18in a few 20in mixed in..Managed 10 off the rocks u til it got a little too "sporty" out there..was glad I put new studs on my korkers took a few very cold waves to the chest and back lol..Moved to the pocket with the incoming tide and it was 1 right after the other for 40 mins picked up 13 they all hit the new bone colored 4in magdarter...BT,white teaser and white paddle tail was working from the rocks...All these fish were jacked up from the NE and the white water..Fun afternoon..

Great news. Wish we had those fish in Cape May, I would be out there fishing instead of surfing. It is warming up a little bit. Still recommend wearing a wetsuit when you're near that water because it is only about 42 degrees. Taking a wave to the face can ruin your day quick LOL. Definitely appreciate the reports, congrats gents.
