Early Spring Recap......
Bunker are still on the radar this year, more than ever.
These bunker are both a blessing and a curse. They seem to concentrate all the fish in one area, around them.
There are a few encouraging signs out there:
1. The forage varieties still remain varied and abundant, but not in all areas.
2. lots of little striped bass from the robust 2011 and 2015 YOY classes.
#2 above has become a prominent feature many have been noticing last year and this past Winter. Small 2nd through 5th year class striped bass seem to be everywhere.
Although I try to keep up with the Coastwide striped bass populations, thanks to a few hundred contacts I've met over the years, I need to add to it, that this is the first time I have felt some positive signs in a while.....
The robustness of these small fry year classes does look well for the future of the fishery....
a. given the fact they need a couple years to reach maturity,
b. and folks don't lose sight that there are serious gaps in many of the breeder class years...
I go into more detail in the yearly StripersAndAnglers Coastwide stock assessment
http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/showthread.php?7784-StripersandAnglers-yearly-coastwide-fish-stock-assessment-state-of-the-fishery
Positive nonetheless...and something to be happy about....
In the meantime, if you're out there on the water on a boat, or just fishing some isolated area at night from land...in bad weather... please be careful and safe. God Bless all.

Finally got out fishing the RB. All the reports were encouraging. The rain had me thinking it might be a waste of time. Went anyway. Fished clams on my pole in RB from 5-9. Got one short striper right around sundown. At least I avoided the skunk, quickly released. Thanks for all the info.

Fish the back in rb from 7 to 9. It was the incoming tide and nothing happened for a long time. Then around 8:45 I got a striper on blood worm. It was 27 inches, first striper of the season, chunky little guy. Released to fight another day. Saw a few others caught but not many. Nice to get out there.

This time of year shark river used to be the ticket. I have gone out and did well in march. That was using a lot of chum. Used to be a lot of flounder there. Haven't seen much reported lately. Wonder what happened to them all.

First trip of the season today in Raritan Bay. Could only fish from 4:30 to 6:30am, and around 6 it did peter out at high tide. We did best an hour before slack jigging the channel with rubber shads. stripers of different sizes, biggest 30". The fish finder looked good, I think this weekend will be a good one.

It seems like a lot of the striped bass are out deep where the birds are. I fished last night in raritan bay. Saw a couple small stripers on clams. Lots of guys in the one spot I went to. Some of you guys were catching on lures so I tried that. Bubkus. Managed one skinny short on a clam. I have seen some fat ones though. This weekend I will try a few more spots. Good luck to you all.

We fished the channel because sometimes they stack up there feeding on the herring and bunker. As the water gets warmer they should spread out through the whole bay. The smaller ones will be at the creek mouths feeding on the spearing and small forage. The largest ones tend to stay in the channel or deeper water and may come in chasing the bunker at night. You are on the right track, just keep at it and fish around high tide. Good luck.

Good going, bud. I took the late shift last night. Outgoing tide in the bay. Got 2 small ones with small plugs. I did get a giant whack that shook me up and startled me. Must have been at least a nice keeper, it felt like a 20 pounder. The fish that got away are always bigger than we thought though. I missed the hook set so I'll never know. I was so startled I coughed, that's the part where I crapped my pants a little. Wrote the details in the most embarrassing crap story thread. There are definitely some nicer fish out there. Hit so hard it felt like a blue. So far haven't heard of any other blues caught though. Wishful thinking. Might try to go again tonight to find the fish that beat me.:banghead2:

Tough day. Tried out front in the morning in so moco. Threw metal, bucktail, shads etc no hits. Checked out some things in pier village for lunch. Went to a popular place in the back and fished from 6 till now looking for blues or small stripers. No hits for me. The guys fishing bait even said it had been slow today. The boats are allegedly crushing it. Wondering why a lot of stripers don't be seeming to come in any closer right now.

Looked for some action in the ocean yesterday for 2 hours, and this morning from 6 to 8:30am. I got skunked yesterday. Today was a little better, a few short stripers on rubber shads, white. Then the blue fish came in and they chopped everything up. Threw on a bucktail and caught a few. Biggest was about 10 pounds. They were nice and feisty. In and out quickly. This was in mo co.

Ya funny thing about those bluefish blitzes. They are in and out so quick. Worked the beach in Ocean County yesterday. Right before dark they came in. I got a handful. It was pretty nice on Crocs. By the time it was over, there were dozens of guys rushing onto the beach like there was a million-dollar prize for the biggest blue fish. Crazy

Capt N in the other thread I was talking about this more six pack charters and private boats taking a lot of the striped bass before they have a chance to spawn. I definitely wasn't talking about you, sir. I have read your reports for years. I noticed that you are a pretty decent guy when it comes to conservation. Good luck out there for a great season. thanks for the reports.

Rofl that is such a lie! Photoshopping someone's fish out of a picture, fish that he worked hard to catch, really is about an angry guy with anger management issues.. My advice is to seek therapy quickly.
No offense, but what you are saying is inconsistent with your past posts. Stuff like-
" I hate boaters.
The only good boat is at the bottom of the ocean. All boaters suck.
Boaters are a-holes."
I think I read he offered you sometime in the past to go on his boat, and you said no. So if you're really are not a hypocrite, why not take him up on his offer?:beatin:

The day started off great with eight quality bass within the first hour and then the fleet grew out of control and spread the fish out.
We bounced around from spot to spot picking a fish here and there. Decided to make a move far away from the fleet to some structure that has been good to me in the past.
We were rewarded right away and we absolutely beat on them for hours with eight double headers on the day.

We went out for a few hours Sunday evening and it took some time to catch enough bunker to chunk with.
We chunked from 7-11pm and ended up landing 9 bass to 25# and missed quite a few more along with a few bluefish cutoffs.

Trolled the back of the bay this morning for sunrise and a half hour after. Two stripers
, one 14 and the other 22 pounds. Mojo's did the trick. Kept the 14 pounder for the table, released the other one. The activity seem a lot less than it has been. Maybe they are getting ready to go up the Hudson.

I was hoping to run into mr. Striper or mr. Blue last night monmouth county in the back river area. Threw poppers, rubber and white and black SPs. I had one hit that I missed. It was very slow. The other guys I talked to said they weren't doing anything either. Bring on the blue fish I need one!

Love seeing those big stripers whether I am catching or not. Congrats and tight lines.
Went to the ocean down by Pier Village last night. It was rough and didn't catch anything. After that moved to a location in the back, tried for blues, got the skunk.

The blues showed up again at the park this weekend. There were some nice ones in there, up to 15 pounds. I was throwing metal. Some other folks got them on plugs and bucktails.

Into the blues in moco yesterday in the back. Fought a couple, lost a lot more. Small plugs and some topwater poppers. It was good until the wind got stronger and the tide got close to low. Man that wind was howling.

I was out in the back in Monmouth County yesterday as well. I must have picked the wrong place, because I saw only the blues that were a few. It was still nice to see some of them. Nothing for me. These blue fish are like all head and a very long body.

Have been hearing how great the bay was so I went early this morning. I think I made a mistake because the tide was very low. It wasn't bad when I started out with poppers, but eventually the wind was fierce. So I only fished for one and a half hours. Zippo for me. Still a nice morning out there if it wasn't that windy.

Good going guys. JB the blue fish in the one of the next-to-last pics looks like it is big and fat, a lot different than some of the other blue fish. Has that purple shine direct from the ocean. Nice looking fish.

I fished moco last night in the back on the incoming tide 8 - 11. Got some nice blues, but it was on and off. It seems like waves of them would come through and then I would get hit. All on bone color SPs.

Noticed a similar thing. Went to Island beach and fish the last 2 hours before dark. The closer it got to dark the better the catching was. I got a couple nice ones on bucktails and crocodile spoons. My biggest was only about 10 pounds tho. One guy caught one that he said was 18 pounds. massive bluefish

Out late last night deep in the back. Monmouth County in the dark. A few places. Tossing rubber and small plugs. Two short bass on the rubber. Then a big blue bit me off and I went to plugs. One more blue and that was it.

Wow looks like I missed a lot of good activity. Have been staying away the last two days because I thought the wind would screw it up. Looks like I guessed wrong LOL. Thanks for the heads up, will be out hitting it hard.
