The blues showed up again at the park this weekend. There were some nice ones in there, up to 15 pounds. I was throwing metal. Some other folks got them on plugs and bucktails.

Into the blues in moco yesterday in the back. Fought a couple, lost a lot more. Small plugs and some topwater poppers. It was good until the wind got stronger and the tide got close to low. Man that wind was howling.

Great news. I almost didn't think the weak fish were going to show up this year. Thanks for sharing.

I was out in the back in Monmouth County yesterday as well. I must have picked the wrong place, because I saw only the blues that were a few. It was still nice to see some of them. Nothing for me. These blue fish are like all head and a very long body.

Have been hearing how great the bay was so I went early this morning. I think I made a mistake because the tide was very low. It wasn't bad when I started out with poppers, but eventually the wind was fierce. So I only fished for one and a half hours. Zippo for me. Still a nice morning out there if it wasn't that windy.

Good going guys. JB the blue fish in the one of the next-to-last pics looks like it is big and fat, a lot different than some of the other blue fish. Has that purple shine direct from the ocean. Nice looking fish.

I fished moco last night in the back on the incoming tide 8 - 11. Got some nice blues, but it was on and off. It seems like waves of them would come through and then I would get hit. All on bone color SPs.

Noticed a similar thing. Went to Island beach and fish the last 2 hours before dark. The closer it got to dark the better the catching was. I got a couple nice ones on bucktails and crocodile spoons. My biggest was only about 10 pounds tho. One guy caught one that he said was 18 pounds. massive bluefish

Out late last night deep in the back. Monmouth County in the dark. A few places. Tossing rubber and small plugs. Two short bass on the rubber. Then a big blue bit me off and I went to plugs. One more blue and that was it.

Big blues came into IBSP this afternoon. I did well on bucktails and pork. Saw others sacrifice a lot of shads. john at Betty and nicks will be sold out of rubber tomorrow at this rate. It really is easier and less expensive to use bucktails, but John can always use the revenue. They are in a lot of places, and the back as well. Fishermen were also getting them on bunker chunks.

I fished Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was very windy cold and nasty I got the skunk. I fished the ocean in Moco and then went into the back where everyone has been, but they weren't really doing that well and neither did I. Yesterday afternoon was better, it seems like the blues turned on late afternoon and I got a bunch. That small diamond jig seems to be a very good producer. Plus it only has one hook so you don't get all tangled up with the trebels.

Moco 7-10pm. Got into some decent blue fish in the back. They were kind of picky, could only get them with rubber shads. After I was tired of having them tear them up, I went to the Oceanside and fished for an hour and a half. Picked up one small striper on bucktail and that was all she wrote. Water and winds seem like they got a little colder.

05-09-2017, 09:14 AM
Bunker chunks will usually tell you if the blues are in the area. If they won't hit bunker chunks then they are not thick. Have been seeing a lot of blues lately. Colder water will turn them off of artificials for a bit. They get sluggish.

Out Saturday morning for the Coastal Fly Rodders Annual One Fly Tournament (surf only).

We got into the bluefish pretty good on fly rods, I landed around 15 and missed/dropped just as many.

The spinning rod guys had them every cast (seems like the blues had a much easier time finding the bigger plugs over the smaller flies in the dirty water).

Ended up grabbing second place with 6 bluefish on my one fly before it became un-fishable.

After the tournament was over I went over to the boat to see if we could get some more bluefish just outside the marina. We were greeted by very dirty water but were still able to catch a couple on flies/plugs in 4-6ft of water.

That looks like a blast, congrats! I was curious about the fly, the chartreuse one that is four pics down. It doesn't look like much to it. Not trying to be critical but I didn't know they would hit something with that little hair on it?
Or is that what it looked like after they were beating up on it for awhile?

Got to throw out bunker and you will be rewarded. We were getting a lot of blues in the raritan. bunker chunks. Got to be too much so we moved ops to the Hudson. Pretty decent fishing but a lot of waiting around. Deep in the night. Up to 19lbs. Waiting for the bunker to set up for the next few months after the spawn and then the fishing will get better.

Except for Atlantic city chatter you arent hearing about it but every town in SNJ is jacked with Boofish. Unlike last year the mid sized are mixed in with the gators too. The pic doesn't capture it well but this one was over the 40" mark just as the heavy stuff came in friday night. My instincts tell me they have to go before a significant big bass run (outside raritan) I remember a time when spring was 1-3 lbers from land, nothing stays the same though 20930

I heard there was some great giant blue fish in upper Cape May County. So I went over there Friday night. But unlike shark heart, I was a sissy. I got one big blue fish on an SP, and the weather got too bad for me and I quit. 34 incher. I went back yesterday morning and had about 2 hours of good fishing. I was tossing two ounce Avas, blind casting, and they would come by every once in a while. There were a couple of other fishermen but not too many guys. Amazing bluefish action, especially for the bluefish starved people on SNJ.
I wonder what is keeping these fish around, anyone know?

Another quick story on other night a thick school of blues stayed in the trough until like the last minutes of receding tide, could feel lure going over the backs and another guy came running out of the water cause they hit his legs. A few got snagged by accident by all fishing. One of the ones i got on the dorsal was like a 10 lber. Oh Man I didnt think id ever get that fish in, with his head free Id nearly beach him and it 10" of water he would wiggle right back out, it looked like a comedy show Id try to grab the leader and fish would go back out, about the 6th try I got the leader

Haha I have done that. I oncehad a blue hooked behind the head and I thought I had the world record striper because it was staying down deep, which stripers usually do. Last minute decision to chunk on the boat yesterday with my brother...wasn't really expecting much with all the dirty washed out water from Saturday's heavy rain & winds. We would have been content with a few bluefish to be honest.

Total was 23 bass up to 26lbs (only 7-8 were keepers) and two bluefish.

The first spot was a complete bust and waste of two hours...not even a tap.

Decided to burn some fuel and check out a new area which I hoped had some cleaner water. Made the run only to be greeted by some rain moving into the area (we got spared on the thunder luckily).

It's crazy how much cropping/editing I need to do nowadays on fishing pictures and even then still not safe from stalkers!

Some guys have given "creeping while you're sleeping" a whole new meaning.

We were at the inlet last Tuesday afternoon. I remember it being a very slow pick day.

Here's a small keeper from Monday night that was kept for the table.

It's crazy how much cropping/editing I need to do nowadays on fishing pictures and even then still not safe from stalkers!

I have a similar problem places that I fish. Lots of structure. Bridges, lighted dock areas etc. All places that those in the know would be able to tell if I posted pics on the net. On the one hand you want to try to help people who aren't catching. Otoh, you realize a large portion of guys who troll the internet sites are lazy *** internet report chasers. They don't want to learn anything they are just looking for spots. I hate all those lazy dudes, and wish a horde of green flies would chase them around every time they go out. Even at night. They deserve it.

Oh I did catch some fish last night. In the back OC with rubber and light jig heads. Nothing big, biggest was 27 inches. The ocean is heating up with action. We should have a good week ahead of us.

Fished nomoco from 5-7a. Heavy NE wind. Best I could do was throw heavy metal and bucktails. Conditions not that great, much prefer west wind. Got a few different sized blues on ava 2oz.

Fun time playing C&R with the fly rods on mixed size bluefish last Friday with Ed, Pete, and Charlie from Coastal Fly Rodders.

Saturday's was blowing hard North East and we decided to give it a shot in the bay but we just couldn't get past the bluefish.

Good going SH. Been hearing of a good bite near an inlet in atlantic county. Went there last night. Got a couple blues on bucktail. When it got dark things turned off. Still nice to have a bend in the rod. May try back before the crowds start arriving for the weekend.

Thats why I like surfing AND fishing. When the winter storms show up it's usually bad for the fishing. Same with the spring noreasters. Bring a wetsuit and fishing pole to the beach with your surfboard and you get the best of both worlds. Also sometimes have seen bunker out there and stripers crashing on them. It doesn't happen a lot. Still, great to have a front row seat when that happens.

My usual stretch of beach on the incoming tide one hour before sunrise. Managed one short right away and then another short about an hour later. Bucktail and grub. Water is cleaning up a bit but there is still rough surf in some areas.

Chunked overnight and the bluefish kept us busy throughout the night. We managed 4 bass overnight on the chunk, the two largest going 31# and 45# on boga (both released).
Check out the serious girth on the 45# along with the deformed stripes...would love to know what caused that and how long ago it happened.
Went on the troll at day break and put a mid 20# bass in the box and dropped another one.

Chunked yesterday morning in the bay for a few hours and had 3 stripers to 32" along with a few small bluefish and short fluke.
This one short bass had his pectoral fins clipped on both sides.
Interesting to see this RI and MA tactic of "conservation" against commercial fishing make its way down to NJ.

Some gillnetters cut off pectoral fin to get fish out of a net
Some tournaments cut off fin when they weigh fish so fish can only be weighed once.
We keep bass alive in large live well and release after weighing, as many other non chest-pounders do

This was like a 14" bass, maybe 16" using "NJ measurements"

I have heard about RI/MA guys cutting fins when they release a fish so if it ever gets caught by a commercial guy later on it can't be sold legally (those states require recreational anglers to clip fins so those recreational fish don't end up being sold).
