The bass season doesn't open till april 15. Been getting some herring near the deepwater docks, usual places. Didn't think they would have stayed around with the cold weather. Maybe the numbers really are up. Good luck fellas.

SS inlet 7-9. Was a little weedy so I moved to the west near some rocks. Picked up 2 little guys on buck and pork, my old faithful early spring go-to. Good luck out there ladies and gents.

Hit the surf last night, Strong wind at my back. Bucktailed a few tiny runts. Very cold could only handle an hour. First trip of the season for me, felt good to shake the winter cobwebs off.

Fished the css yesterday after work. Started near the beginning of outgoing. A little breezy, I alternated between a hopkins and a bucktail. Caught 2 stripers on the bucktail, one on the hopkins. Fat, short, covered with sea lice. A good start!

Nice! It has been windy, how are you tossing them 4 1/2" hellcats? What do they weigh and how do you get them out there? thanks

They are less than 3/8 oz. First time I have fished them
20 lb leader, 20 lb braid 9 foot rod that handles light plugs well.
Best casts 20-30 yards I am thinking.
Some fish were in real close, I had waded out 20 yards.
Learning a new area, fishing water types that I have not fished often if at all, love the learning process.

The hellcat is a great profile to mimic shrimp and early season small whitebait, good choice.

Was out there this AM again. Five short Bass largest ~ 24 inches.
1 on bomber, 1 on 4 ?” hellcat, 1 on Hydro Minnow (6:00 AM fish, all other action in dark)and two on loaded small redfin.
Missed a couple hits and I think I lost 1 fish.
Saw no bait. Whatever they are feeding on its small and thin like you mentioned, no action for me on anything of size (darters or metal lips).

I am still in the West Sound, trying to learn the area a bit. This AM trip, murky water.
Three shorts (Lokie SM, Chartreuse Bucktail and rubber on 1/2 jig head). Missed a few hits, lost a fish, all action when current was strongest.

I would pass on the w sound till June when the blues come in and the bass come up the east river from the hudson. There are some nice bass to be had on the SS. Fished last night in the rain, 3 striped bass to 34" on a yellow darter. Bluefish have been running through in the daytime as well. Good luck

Headed to West End inlet this AM, nothing doing in dark. Lost a fish on darter in the light, then caught 2 blues between 30 and 35 inches (metal lips).
Lot of guys fishing in the day light, only saw or heard of two other Blues caught.
First Blues of the year for me, they are fun.

Headed to West End inlet Monday AM again, two short bass and 4 blues.
All between 20 and 25 inches. Lost 3 larger fish, likely the big gators.
Bass on black teaser, plugs were getting hit, not hooked up.
Had a 7" loaded redfin knocked into the air in close, could hear the bbs rattling.

Have been fishing a little E of there, similar results. The big bass seem to have breezed past montauk and are at the ccc already. Things sure are changing. Nice going on the gators, they are fun.

Finally made a trip out east before fathers day. Did a lot of casting. Managed to hook 2 solid fish toward the middle of the outgoing. 10lbs and 17 lbs, released. They took SPs. Right at dawn there was a 10 minute flurry of bluefish. Hit the SP, and also small tins. Hardly anyone else fishing out there.

Been hitting the the SS, Moses/Jones ocean side the last 3 AMs, 1-5 AM basically.
3 trips, 3 bass, ~26 inches,~32 inches and this AM ~36 inches. Happy with these bass, last year had big time issues catching a bass 30 inches. All released.
Also no one out there fishing.

That type of "fishing" is not for me. I like the solitude and don't mind working for the fish.
Fished this AM, same 1:00 - 5:30.
Dropped two bass in a crazy wash in the dark, one on a 10" Hogy was a decent bass.
Then false dawn was on way back to lot and saw a swirl, picked up 2 Blues and a Bass ~28/30 inches on Surf Asylum Flat Glide white.
Large amount of small bait had moved in and covered a wide area. Was all alone, but had to leave.

Hell no, I have my hands full not killing myself on all the rocks. I get enough excitement getting knocked over and bounced around looking like a distressed seal in 3-4 feet of water in my wet suit...:viking:

OK haven't seem much in the way of reports so here goes. I had a lame sept in the bays behind some of the bridges. Pitched to the shadow lines, no one was home. Managed a few runts on rubber shad. oct was a little better, the fish turned from 12 inchers into 22 inchers. Ooh la la! Last night I got a good one, must have been over 36 inches. On a sp fresh out of the box. Lost at my feet. Oh well maybe I will catch him again tonight. Some good weather today and tomorrow. Then it turns snotty. I will keep trying. Good luck guys

Herring are starting to trickle in. picked up a dozen tonight on sabiki rigs before it started raining a little. My buddy clued me in. They are at the usual places. Try close to high tide. Good luck.
