LUCENA CITY, Philippines -- Five fishermen died after the improvised explosives they were making for illegal fishing exploded in Balud town in Masbate province Saturday afternoon, police said in a belated report Sunday.

Senior Supt. Reuben Theodore Sindac, Masbate police provincial director, identified the victims as Noel Bañez, 45; Genelito Bañez, 37; Robell Gajupo, 29, Ruby Morales, 23; and Francisco Ayos, 23, all residents of the fishing village of Pajo of Balud town.
Police said that at around 4:30 p.m., the five were manufacturing homemade bombs, which they intended to use for illegal fishing operations when the bombs exploded.

Gajupo and Ayos died on the spot while Genelito died at Balud Hospital.

Noel Bañez and Morales who were rushed to the MMG Hospital in Masbate City later succumbed to their injuries, Sindac said.
Police had yet to determine exactly what triggered the explosion.
The police official urged fishermen to stop engaging in illegal fishing practices.
