Lures that Rattle

Can someone tell me when is the best time to use these lures?

I have only been using them at night but thought maybe I'm missing out on some other action with them?

I use them whenever the fish are scattered. Rattletraps, magdarters, megabaits, all are good under the right conditions. I have used them both in the day, and the night time.

You can also use them when the water is murky after a storm.

What do you guys think about the new bucktail jigs that have a rattle attached. I think Myers the guy who caught the world record striped bass designed them. Do they work or just another gimmick? thanks

I think it's just a gimmick. When you are fishing a bucktail it's the technique you impart to it which gets you the fish. Just my .02. If it works for you it's because you believe in it just like any new product on the market.

I am undecided on rattles in flies and bucktails.

What I can tell you is that if you really want some rattles just buy them and wrap them onto the bucktails hook shank right behind the lead lead.

Its super easy to do yourself and you don't have to pay the premium price for some marketing gimmick. Even the ugliest tie in will be hidden by the bucktail and it won't affect your ability to use a trailer like a pork rind.

I like to use them in dirty water and sometimes in a rough surf perhaps one more thing for them to key in on through their lateral line rattles cause more vibration,in clear water I tend not to use them

I finally got some time to pour bucktail jigs yesterday after work.

Poured from a custom mold for Canal Jigs (Kuzia style) with sockets for 3D eyes in 1oz and 2oz.

Used a heavy duty forged Mustad 7/0 in 1oz and 8/0 in the 2oz.

Going to see if I can get the powder paint out after work today to coat them and tie up a few with rattles...

Here is a 2oz custom canal jig with 8/0 Forged Mustad that I powder painted yesterday using a heat gun for the first time. I found the heat gun was much better than my prior experiences of using a propane torch. With the propane torch its hard to get the temperature right...too often I would burn the paint or not get it hot enough the first time.

Tied up a few this morning, zap a gap glue under and during the wrapping process so the hair wont pull out. Put a coat of hard as nails over the wraps for extra durability and will seal the wraps and head with 30min waterproof epoxy for extra durability.

Now all I need is some fish.

As for the tying video, Lou covered most of the basics and has some important tips in there. The only thing I will say is that I find it easier to cut the hair butts before tying it onto the jig head. That may be because I learned to tie flies first but I can't stand that mess.
