I've never been to Hatteras; Oregon Inlet is a close as I've gotten. Crowds aren't my thing.
PI is definitely peaceful. The only access is by ferry and they only allow a certain # of people.
If you ever seriously consider it, let me know, maybe we can work something out.

Beautiful pics rickman. Looks like you were fishing the sides of a notched jetty. dark, was that the GW bridge?
fin-chaser, that's a great pic of the rainbow, do you have any bigger ones? With that small one, I was going to make a joke and say that if you were positioned over a few degrees, you might look like the leprechaun with the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. But I can't see you clearly in the darkened pic, so the joke would have been moot. And yet, I told it anyway.;) :)

Rickman, I think Charlietuna was referring to my pic also. Charlie, no, it was one bridge South of that, the Verazzano.
As for the Finchaser leprechaun comment, I would say finchaser's "pot of gold" is his jigging and plugging skills. The guy could pull a striped bass out of a rain puddle, even with killie around. :D :HappyWave:

jonthepain
06-26-2011, 09:54 PM
no, i wish i had an slr and was able to swap out lenses.
the camera i have ($140 wal mart) has a panorama feature. you take three shots and it stitches them together.

How's the fishing up there on the sound? think they're holding around those pilings?
DarkSkies
08-11-2011, 05:16 PM
Good catch, it's exactly around those pilings where I got the fish. Only porgies though, it was like they were stacked up on a rockpile about 50' before that.
One thing about the T&W, if the fish are there in numbers and you do it a lot you get a sense of where they might hit. Troll past a point, you can expect a hit. Troll a bulkhead, pilings, rocky bottom area with different sized boulders, creek mouth, all are areas where you can "feel" a hit coming and learn to anticipate it. When that doesn't happen, you'll usually see reports from me saying the fish are scattered. because they aren't exactly where you think they could be...definitely keeps ya on yer toes..
You have the nicest shots from your backyard, bro...God must want you to get better. :HappyWave:

Fished this morning ocean side from 1:00 to 10:30, El Skunko. Hit three spots. First spot nothing, didn't see any bait. Next spot lots and lots of bait moving south, in close, didn't see anything on it. Third spot saw what looked like False Albacore. Most of the time was about 275 yards out, Had one brief shot at them (came within 50 yards for maybe a minute), and missed. Was like a lake out there almost. Water was stained early on and seemed to be cleaning up as the morning got later. Was real nice out, humidity gone. Great being out there.

Fished this morning from 12:45 to 11:00. Fished out front. Couple bumps in the dark, nothing, worked a good mile of beach. Sun up and I don't think I ever saw so many bait fish. Worked a few areas of the beach, but settled south side of a rock pile. Seemed like every 15 minutes a pod of small bait fish would go by. Some of the pods looked they were being harassed a little, most not. Only managed one small blue on a crippled herring. Did not see any Albies or large fish messing with the pods. At 9:30 headed north and stopped at two spots, first had a few pods of bait fish, nothing on them. Next one I saw a couple of swirls/thrashes in a pod of bait, open beach, no crowd, so got the rod and gave chase, could not hook up. Had a great time, cooler weather was awesome. Decent sun rise. I saw so many pods of bait I was mesmerized. On the way back home on the parkway it seemed like I could see the pods sometimes on the road, and when I close my eyes I see pods of small bait :kooky:.
Water was hot, was changing a plug in the dark and the plug that was in the water actually felt hot.

Fished ocean side this morning, 1:00-10:00, one area, but miles of it. Caught a short striper on Mag-darter around 4:30 (just as it entered the white water). Then only one small blue a little after sun-up. Could see some small bait being harassed for about an hour after daylight. Was a little breezy out there for awhile after the sun was up.
Also around 3:00 I "caught" another wacky fish. Its been a real weird year fishing so far for me.

Fished ocean side this morning 1:00 - 10:00.
Beautiful night and surf.
Worked a good couple miles of beach.
Around 3:30 with a 14" Hogy I hook into a nice fish. Takes drag and I some how loose it.
5:30 I catch a ~12 inch bass on rubber teaser.
Sun up, lots and lots of bait. See a couple fish go air born.
Around 9:00 while working an area with tons of small bait a bunch of Albies pop up 10-20 yards out, they work the small bait, on my 4th cast, with a fast retrieve of a Pojee I hook up, Strong Fast Run, line coming off spool and then its off after about 20 seconds. No more hook ups.
Was a fun outing, great weather......So I now can't land a fish over 12 inches. Unreal :beatin:
Maybe my drag was to tight on both fish:don't know why:...Googan Move. Dark with the elections coming up and this seasons events, looks like I'm giving you a run for President.....You need to do one of those fall asleep in the porta johns or something to steal my momentum:HappyWave:. Fished our front this morning 3:30 - 11:00, worked a good mile of the beach. Started off in normal form missing a solid hit on a plastic swimmer  .
Then around 5:15 picked up a short bass on the plastic swimmer. Then around 6:15 another short bass on the rubber teaser.
Then when the sun came up I was in the middle of a ton of small bait. Half hour later bunch of swirls on the bait but I can't hook up.
Saw lots of bait and some decent swirls on it as I fished back to where I started, I have been hopeless so far in catching fish that are chasing this small bait. Then around 9:30 was working a pencil and about 30 yards out I see a fish swiping at it. No hook up..then about 10 yards out the fish hits it and I see stripes :wheeeee: . Was about 26 inches. Was a really fun trip, cooler weather was awesome. Decent sunrise too.

Fished this morning ocean side 3:30-~9:30. Tons and tons and tons of small bait fish. One short bass on the rubber teaser in close (10 feet from beach) as it was chasing bait as the sun was rising. Hit hard and felt like a blue :). Had one other real hard hit and missed (I need to really work on my reflexes and slam that hook home  ). Nice morning, had a good time, fished with Rip (he stayed awake this time  :HappyWave: ). Saw the rod Finchaser made for him, real nice. Cardoc fished some too, was good to see him again.

Fished out front this morning 3:30-10:30. Ocean had calmed down and looked great. Water was pretty dirty. I worked a lot of beach, lots of walking and ended up with the skunk. Had a hit early on a 10" Hogy and missed (normal start for me). Found some small bait and a few small swirls but no hook ups, then around 7:00 found a big area with fish slamming through bait mostly 200-500 yards off the beach. There was activity as close as 30 yards (semi consistent), but most was out there. I hooked up in close (5 yards out)for 5 seconds on a PoJee, rod bent then nothing, had one other hit on a long cast, PoJee again. Had this in front of me for at least two hours and could not land a fish. Not sure what was out there, whatever I had on for that short period was not a snapper. Threw all sorts of metal at different retrieves Ava 007 green tail, Hopkins shorty, PoJee 1 1/2 and 3 oz, Deadly Richard, Kastmaster 3/4, 1 and 1 1/2 oz. , 3 oz crocodile spoon, 2 oz and 3 oz Crippled Herring...also threw a couple spooks and a 2 sizes of pencils (very small and 2 oz), small needle, and SP and DSM Minnows, a small white mullet metal lip, white bucktail (1/2 oz), chartreuse 10" Hogy..... white tube teasers, yellow feathered teasers, white feathered teasers, chartreuse feathered teasers..no teasers......4 foot of 30 lb fluorocarbon without clips (tied direct)......I was amazed I could not catch a fish......
Had a great time out there, except for the murky water, conditions were beautiful, was all alone, just me and lots of fish that I could not catch.....
Had a streak of 5 outings in a row with at least one Striper, going into this trip I was thinking today's conditions were the most favorable out of all of the last five days I have fished. Had a good idea where all that bait would be as well as other spots where I had a good shot at a fish. Was very confident when I hit the water, more than the other times. I sent Rip-Plugger an e-mail with my plan, how confident I was....also I included in the e-mail "I'm all set up for the skunk", Yup, and a huge one it was :skunk:.
Also there was a nice sunrise

Fished this morning 1:30-11:00 out front. Two skunks in a row for me now. Really enjoyed trying to catch fish this trip. The water at times was calm, other times had a nice chop. This was the first time I really was able to fish all the new structure (worked a good mile or two of the beach), was fun even without any action. Saw a few swirls 200-300+ yards from the beach. Water was stained big time. Great weather, wind was not an issue and only had one issue with the almost "frost bite hand" (10-15 minutes of "OUCH" and all was better....not catching fish=not very cold hands......), otherwise I was extremely comfortable. High tide did not seem very high, wading out to a sand bar was easy around high tide. Still a few pieces of wood out there (be careful). Was planning on going again tomorrow, but may be a day or two away as my shoulder is a bit fatigued from all the casting.....

Monty, I want you and Steve to be the guys in charge of finding dead things...:headbang:...I really do.. because I feel you two have a special talent for that. :ROFLMAOIf there was a trophy you would both have to get trophies or special plaques in that category. ;)
I can't help it if one of the rare times I was walking off Sandy Hook in the daylight I happened to spot that torso....
I wanted to ignore it but the stench and the uniqueness of it drew me towards it...:kooky:...That old timer happened to be walking by. He told me he and his friend saw it earlier in the week, and ignored it because they thought it might be a body and didn't want to get involved....That kind of pullled me in even more.....
Turns out he and I have become good friends since then. He and his friends are retired, fish every day, and we have shared some good intel from that friendship. I have benefitted by hearing some more old-timer stories. which I never tire of listening to.......:learn:
I am really sorry if it seems I stole anyone's thunder in that regard....I could not ignore the stench and the hairy black thing wrapped up in canvas...it was too much of a compelling draw...... :HappyWave:

Sometimes when I put them on there is a space between the spring action, possibility of them working themselves off the lure, but I have not had anything like that happen. Are you actually seeing them bend? I always thought they were more robust than the Roscos.
I fished ocean side this morning 1:00 to 8:30. One hit around 2:30 on a Sluggo, even with my cat like reflexes I missed it. Then nothing the rest of the outing. Could not even manage a fluke on a Bucktail/teaser rig. Beautiful night, great time on the water. Water was a bit dirty, but decent white water.

Some people say "it's not all rainbows and sunshine" but I beg to differ. 17380 17381 I headed to LBI this morning with the intention on shark fishing. I got to the island around 4:30 this morning and stopped in at the bay where I saw a lighted doc. Something was busting bait there, probably snapper blues. The bait looked to be peanut bunker about 2-3". I normally have my cast net with me but I didn't this time. I tried to catch whatever was feeding but they were not interested.
I headed to get bait but none of the bait stores were open so I shot down to the beach to do some plugging. The water was cold. The waves were good sized and there was some white water but nothing was going on- I went up to get bait at 6 when the bait store opened. No fresh bunker so I grabbed 1 frozen bunker because the water was really cold- I did not think there would be much shark action anyway.
Well I could not hold bottom with 6 oz. after 2 attempts and loosing my bait I transitioned to the bay. I ended up foul hooking a large stingray or skate. I couldn't get the thing on the beach because there was a lip there and every time I would try to grab him he would take off. I was able to get close enough to him and stick my finger in his spiracle to get some leverage but that really pissed him off. He started flapping his wings which caused the hook to dislodge and off he went.
a buddy of mine met up with me and we fished for flounder. He caught one short and then it was time to call it a day. So back to my opening statement- to some people today may have been a crap fishing day. As I was standing on the beach and watching my line move to down the beach with the current I began to think how much it sucked that the cold front screwed everything up and how the current was too strong etc, I looked up and saw the sun shining and the rainbow in the sky and knew that being out there was reward enough - catching fish is just a bonus.
Have a great day!

Fished this morning 1:00 - 8:00, ocean side.
Picked up two short bass ~20 inches on loaded red fins in the dark.
Then false dawn and sun-up caught 3 cocktail blues (two top water on a Howdy and 1 on a Pojee), missed a couple hits and lost two.
Also had three blow-ups on the white Hogy by bass but my shoulder is shot and the way I was holding my rod when the rod bent I could not move the rod to set the hook...:beatin:,
No action on the teaser this trip.
Nice water, beautiful night, at least a half dozen shooting stars, decent action, had an awesome time out there.

Monty your pictures area double edge sword. On one hand I stare at them and can hear the pounding of the surf, smell the ocean air and see the shooting stars as my eyes focus into the sky to help me "feel" the slightest hit on my lure. I can't wait to get back out there. The bad part is I get started late on my work because I am day dreaming with your images.
I know come the cold days of winter I will be looking back through these threads to get the visual stimulation and then come spring- we will do it all over again!

My report...took Pebbles out for a 2 hour tour early AM...swing and a miss.....
We were hoping for blues or small bass but there was no bait around where we set up....the overcast conditions kept us there throwing rubber, bucktails and plugs...just didn't happen for us....but it was good to be out there again...Been a long time since I wet a line....:fishing:
Great to here you both got out and went fishing :HappyWave:
I fished this morning from 1:00 to 9:00.
Great water to fish, but I could only manage a short bass on a rubber shad and a star gazer.
I had a bunch of bumps and misses in the dark and light, but my hook setting abilities are at an all time atrocious low (shot shoulder). I had a bass hit a white Hogy and after I missed it was thinking if someone was watching me they would have thought it looked more like me trying to wrestle my Hogy back from the fish than setting the hook.
But had a great time out there, enough bumps and misses to drive me bonkers. Water was absolutely perfect for fishing (waves, white water, clarity..could have been colder).

As I was heading to work Friday, I noticed that the local nuke plant was giving off an interestingly colored steam cloud:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/jonthepain/sunsets/harris_zps39896c1d.jpg
And then on the way home, I thought it might turn out to be a pretty cool sunset, so I stopped at a lake that I cross on my way home, and I was not disappointed:

There were lots of ducks and seagulls and hawks and stuff, but they are just specks in most of the photos. I saw a big tom turkey and a bald eagle on my way in to work that morning. All in all, not a bad day.

You're welcome.
Yes, Shearon Harris Lake, with the nuke plant, is a trophy black bass lake. My personal best is 8 pounds, but the tourneys consistently weigh in 10 pounders. That's a big largemouth.
The sunset photos are of Jordan Lake. Jordan has stripers.
It's not the same as the surf though; I miss the surf.

Fished this morning 2:00 to 9:00
Had a great time despite my inability to catch fish.
New area, liked it a lot.
Found some nice white water and I should have caught more fish.
Had the weekly Hogy bit in half at sunrise.
Missed a couple hits, small fluke on a darter.
Then finally at 8:00 I landed a short bass on a Superstrike popper.
Had missed a fish about 10 minutes earlier on a Mambo in the white water, then FINALLY that bass hit the popper in the white water.
I haven't seen many stripes this year, so it was nice.....
Had a great time, nice morning, really enjoy fishing that type of water. Even squeezed a quasi sunrise pic out of the trip.

Fished Long Island Sound 1:00 - 9:00 this morning.
Ka-Skunked big time.
Saw no bait, water felt very cold.
Had weeds on the ebb and water was murky on the flood.
Great night out, excellent casting practice, lots of exercise walking.
O for 2 trips for 2015 so far. I should be in decent shape physically if I ever catch a fish again.
May head out front next trip, miss the white water......my bath tub has more wave action than the sound.
Decent sunrise.
