Slack in a cast

I seem to have too much slack in my cast. I have to reel in before the "retrieve" starts? What am I doing wrong.

jigfreak, are you using braid or mono? If mono, think about a switch to braid, as it will be thinner and cut through the air better, minimizing friction.
