Flies to use for beginners

I don't know a lot about fly fishing, but I have seen guys using flies attached at the end of their spinning reels, about 1 foot from the lure. Can anyone tell me what kind of flies they are, and where is the best place to get them?

man, u can just get an assortment, coupla bunker profiles, for when peanuts are around, and some small ones, skinny (clousers I think) for when the sandeels are around. Don't usually throw them until later in the season with a sppinner as a teaser, so you got some time to set up.
