What's the proper way to oil a reel?

on the exterior, you want just a drop at both sides of the bail where it's attached to the rotor.
the handle knob usually has a small cap on it,pop it off and 2 drops in there and put it back on.

if the handle does not have a cap then a small drop where it spins on the shaft to the knob.

interior will require a teardown and cleaning out of old grease thrash ect.
I use a small container of Purple power for the parts full strength, for the outside I use it 50/50 as full strength will remove any anodizing the reel may have, paint too!!.

I soak the internal parts[bearings, gears screws springs and such in the full strength stuff, close the container and allow it to soak over night.the rest I spray on and then rinse then use dish soap to final clean then rinse.
dry all parts and put a small dab on any parts tat slide, roll spin or whatever together and you'll be good to go.when You're ready to put on the side plate, jst spread a bit on top of everything and close her up!

you're done!
