Outdoors: Knee Deep Club pushes back ice fishing contest

North Jersey ice fishing continued through last week's spring weather break, but today's Lake Hopatcong ice fishing contest has been postponed until March 1.

While ice fishing became nonexistent downstate last weekend, anglers were still catching fish through safe ice at Lake Hopatcong as well as at ponds and other northern lakes on Thursday, but late Friday the Knee Deep Club cancelled today's event. Anglers had to be careful getting from shorelines to thicker ice.

Hopatcong ice and fishing information is available at 973-663-3826, where Laurie Murphy at Dow's reported a 17 1/2 pound channel catfish and seven-pound walleye were caught by Roman Pera, an 8-pound walleye was caught off Chestnut Point by Stanley Malinowska. Greg Coughlin got a 6-pound 4-ounce largemouth at Woodport, Eddie Mackin and Bernie Yocius each caught 1-pound-14 crappies, and Chris Mackin weighed-in a 4-pound-5 pickerel.
