Fish Tale: A frenzy of fish

The setting is Bean Point, where various fishermen are spread out in the shallow water along the beach casting into a calm sea, hoping to catch the pugnacious pompano but catching instead the more placid whiting.

It seemed that there had not been so many dolphins around this year, but I noticed more of them than usual that morning. They were leaping about at some distance from the shore, fishing back and forth, and after a while their movement just became part of the backdrop.

Suddenly, this rather tranquil scene erupted into a thrashing mass of frenzied fish. About a half-dozen dolphins were herding thousands of jacks, which were in a desperate attempt to escape, leaping across the surface of the water toward the beach. So large was the school — I’d guess about the size of a tennis court — that the sound of their thrashing could be heard from where we stood, and so packed that the water darkened.

What followed happened extremely fast. Those anglers more timid, perhaps wiser, beat a hasty retreat for dry land. Yours truly, being neither timid nor particularly wise, stood firm, caught between retrieving my line to save it from almost certain shredding as all these rampaging fish neared, and the intriguing prospect of hooking one.

At any rate there was no time to do much of anything. The jacks came right at me until they were close enough to be seen in detail, giving me a very high-speed eyeball-to-eyeball look. It was quite strange. There were so many of them moving so fast at such close range that all I could do was stand riveted to the spot.
At the last moment, they swerved at my feet and headed along the beach. Immediately my reel started to whine as the spool let go of the line, and it was obvious that I would either run out of line or it would snap. My light rod was not going to slow the snagged fish, to say nothing of the dumbfounded anglers and their equipment along the shore whom I would bang into if I tried to run in pursuit.

Almost immediately there was a sharp twang and the line went dead as the dolphins and their prey continued at breakneck speed down the shore.
For a moment, we were all a little stunned, having witnessed both the suddenness and the breadth of the unusual scene. There was an angler at the far end of our group who had a heavier rod and reel, and who was able — by running along the shore unobstructed — to land one of the jacks. And it was released to run again.

Their buddy, Eric Bartos, loved deep sea fishing, and so they took him out off the coast of Fort Lauderdale. The outing was a success for Bartos, as he was able to land a trophy-sized sailfish. But like John McClane with a hangover, no matter how much *** he was kicking, he couldn't get his mind off his wife.

She probably wasn't much of a looker.In an act that probably got his buddies' secondhand embarrassment glands working over time, Bartos slid his soon-to-be meaningless wedding band onto the bill of the fish. Bartos would later claim it was meant to symbolize the start of his new life as a bachelor, which we believe translates to "I was drunk."

If we know anything about the kind of guys who stick rings on fish, there are about 70 empty cans of Keystone just out of frame.Figuring the fish would get the symbolism and take it off once he and his fish friends were done laughing at the silly new "nose ring," Bartos and his friends returned the fish to the waves with its new bling still in place.
In 2005, the three friends found themselves together once again on a fishing vessel off the Florida coast, two-thirds of them presumably hoping Bartos wouldn't queer up the day with his sad panda antics. As the day wound down, there was finally a big hit on one of the lines, and Bartos grabbed the reel, saving the day via 10 minutes of working a beauty of a sailfish toward the boat. Once the fish was close enough, Liebeskind grabbed the line and noticed something shiny around its bill. It was the wedding ring that Bartos had wedged onto the bill of the sailfish in December of 2002, now back and staring him in the face with a fishy wriggling hatred. After an awkward stunned silence, the men came to their senses and immediately set about snapping photos of the ridiculous coincidence. The fish's bill had clearly grown in girth around the ring, securing it firmly in place

A commercial diver in Russia got himself into a dire predicament when he inexplicably stuck his hand into the mouth of a monkfish, aka a sea-devil (http://www.aphotomarine.com/seafish_lophius_piscatorius_angler_fish_monkfish.h tml). The fish has a row of sharp teeth on both sides of its mouth, and it clamped down on the diver’s hand like a bear foot trap, not letting go.
As you can see, the Russians had the darnedest time figuring out how to get his hand out of the “fish trap.” We apologize for any profanity, if there is any, since they’re speaking Russian, but that just adds to the hilarity. Watch and laugh:




OK, we gave it our best shot at translating what they were saying, and this is what we came up with:
“Why did you stick your hand in its mouth?”
“Does it matter? Just get this thing off me?”
“Here, let me pry its mouth open with my finger.”
[That didn’t work]
“How about we try jamming this piece of wood down its throat?”
“It’s not working. Dang, this hurts. Nyet, don’t try knocking it over the head with that piece of wood. Nyet, nyet, nyet.”
“I know, let me use a fillet knife and cut it off.”
[That didn’t work]
“I told you that knife needed sharpening. Why not you listen to me?”
“Here’s an idea, how about you push down on one side of its mouth with the piece of wood, and I’ll push up on the other side with this pipe.”
[Voila, it worked]
“Whew.”
[Looks down throat]
“Oh, I see why you stuck your hand down its mouth—Not! Dude, next time, use this stick to probe its tonsils, you nincompoop!”

Does anyone have experience with the Russian Dolls?
The ones where the wooden dolls are nested inside each other. You open one and subsequently smaller ones are inside each of them. This story reminded me of that.

Researchers at the University of Delaware set out recently in the hope of recapturing tagged sand tiger sharks. They enticed a large female but it was the bizarre manner by which they captured the predator that left them shaking their heads in disbelief.
After casting a small fish called a menhaden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_menhaden), a small shark called a dogfish was quick to snatch the bait, only to be swallowed by the much larger sand tiger shark. “The dogfish was about 3 feet long and completely swallowed by the sand tiger shark,” states a post on the university’s ORB Lab Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/OrbLab).

The researchers had captured a shark within a shark, which prompted pro bass angler Aaron Martens to comment: “There’s gotta be some kind of ‘turducken (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turducken)‘ label for this kind of situation.”

The ORB Lab is short for Ocean Exploration, Remote Sensing, Biogeography Lab (http://orb.ceoe.udel.edu/).
Scientists are trying to recapture tagged sharks, or tags that have popped off of sharks, to compile data for study.

Sand tiger sharks (http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Gallery/Descript/Sandtiger/Sandtiger.html) are vicious-looking because of the many dagger-like teeth protruding from their jaws.
Writes the ORB Lab in a separate Facebook post: “Their protruding spike-like teeth are perfect for spearing their favorite foods: bony fishes, small sharks, rays, squids, crabs, and lobsters.”
Sand tigers, which can measure to about 10 feet, lose an average of one tooth per day and boast 56 rows of teeth in each jaw “at any time waiting to replace lost or broken teeth.”
The sand tiger in the photo looks to have lost a couple of front teeth during its attack on the dogfish and/or its capture (and release) by scientists.
Quite a day of fishing!

A 54-year-old fisherman is safe after his 14-foot boat capsized as he was landing a 230-pound tuna in the ocean off Hawaii.
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued Anthony Wichman on Friday after receiving a distress call from his wife.
Wichman was fishing about 10 miles southwest of Port Allen on the island of Kauai Friday morning when he hooked the Ahi tuna. Coast Guard Lt.

Jessica Mickelson tells Hawaii News Now (http://tinyurl.com/ksqfuaf)that Wichman was able to use his cellphone to call his wife for help.
The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to rescue Wichman. Friends arrived on another boat and were able to right Wichman's boat. They towed it ? and the fish ? back to port.
