7:43 PM EDT, April 16, 2009 With the ever-tightening noose of stringent fishing regulations making it almost unnecessary to bring a fish cooler on some trips these days, this much is certain: You'll be tossing back more of your catch than ever before.
In years past, it was generally easy to keep marine fishing regulations in focus because there weren't many. Today, with abbreviated seasons, exceptions to the rules for party and charter boats, and specifics sometimes changing during the course of the season, you had better take the time to know what you can fish for, when you can catch it, how big it must be, and how many can be kept.
Stripers, fluke and porgies are fish species with regulations that many anglers find confusing. That's because all three see split seasons, among other particulars.
Striper season opened on Wednesday in marine waters south of the George Washington Bridge and continues through Dec. 15. Recreational anglers can keep one fish apiece measuring between 28 and 40 inches, plus one fish over 40 inches. If aboard a charter or party boat, however, anglers can keep two bass measuring greater than 28 inches.
The latest round of fluke regulations are going to be the toughest pill to swallow this year. The minimum size limit is a discouraging 21 inches and anglers can keep just two fish per day from May 15 to June 15, and then again from July 3 to Aug. 17.
Porgies can be caught by private boat, rental boat or from shore from May 25 though Sept. 26, with a 10-fish creel limit and 10.5-inch minimum size. Anglers fishing aboard party or charter vessels can take up to 10 fish per day between June 12 and Aug. 31 only, but each fish must measure at least 11 inches.
The regulations are confusing, dysfunctional and in need of serious revision. Still, rules are rules and you can view them all in detail at: www.dec.ny.gov (http://www.dec.ny.gov).
The Annual Spring Family Fishing Festival will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Belmont Lake State Park. The lake has been stocked with about 4,000 brown trout and, for this day only, you don't even need a fishing license to wet a line. Call 444-0283 for more information.
