I don't deep hook a fish too often but when I do and I can't get the hook with long pliers I cut the line. Will the hook rusting or deteriorating eventually kill the fish?

From what I have read and been told and what I do is if I can't get the hook out I do what you do and cut the line. This is supposed to give the fish the best chance of living as apposed to doing damage to the gills or mutalating the fish in some way.

When it is in to deep I always cut the line. I often wondered how well they do with the hooks still in.

Better than if every ligament, deep hooked fish was kept at least they get a 50/50 chance.:)

I agree with finchaser. What you want to be careful about is moving the hook around too much inside them if they are deep hooked. Just cut the line as close as you can to the hook, and release them quickly. Be very careful not to handle them too much, or go near their gill plates.

Fish have a good chance of surviving with the hooks left in them. Clamchucker is correct you need to release them quickly.

Under my observation, Gamakatsu hooks rust out by just being in my plug bag. If they are left in the fish I would assume they would be quick to rot.

I have heard that tinned hooks take quite a while to rust out. I am not sure about this though.
