Do you replace hooks with a split ring?

finchaser,
Do you believe the split ring has advantages over the cut VMC attached direct?

Just about all my plugs are replaced with a split ring and closed eye hooks. I have lost a few fish due to the open eye splitting apart. Maybe my fault(old hooks) or maybe faulty production, but I lost confidence. I also check my belly swivels for deterioration and replace them when I rewire.

Yes makes hook lay down against plug for more distance on casts in most cases. I've seen cut hooks snap on many occasions also the cut hooks also have a tendency to rust quicker

I have seen cut Mustads snap on the cast (damn SS). VMC are much stronger.

If you cut them do not bend them out, bend them sideways. When done give the entire eye, especially the cut, a coat of clear nail polish. That will retard the oxidation.

I mostly use split rings but if a plug comes with cut hooks I replace them with cut hooks. I will also use cut hooks if there is too much swing from the split ring. There are some plugs that I feel the swing affects the swim or retrieve or it is obviously getting caught up.
