not at all,the shot is in a small culdisac off a big salt pond,they were hiding in there,at lower tides the fish can't get in there.I bet they got hammered when they came out.

well,I used to do the beaches a lot but, realized one important thing,rivers have much more fish in them.
I have not fished the beach in years.
I find larger rivers with deep holes and strong current areas have fish in them almost all the time.
Thames,housatonic,saugatuck,west river,they all have fish in them almost all the time especially Housatonic and thames.
don't they have rivers in Jersey?,,,,,,,I know there are but,why don't guys fish them?

You are lucky to have all those rivers within reach. We have the mullica and maurice by us but they are muddy a lot of the time and the dominant fish is the white perch and small stripers. Those are some very nice fish thanks for sharing.

well,those rivers are all nearly an hour away from me but, I will travel to any of them.
Hmmm,white perch?,,,well the bass is it''s first cousin you know and I am willing to bet that at times there are some good ones in those rivers you mention.
winter time I bet you can find them in the quiet areas of them too.
there are many other smaller rivers that are not mentioned here that have fish in them wintering over,one just has to go hunting.

thanks Vpass,it started out good then died out .
nothing doing until some gators showed up then it was good but, not a single bass from early june until October this season.
then the gators vacated and the bass showed up but,not in strong numbers.
it was not as good as normal,was a sad spring.

from what I can see there are bunkers around but,I believe there are atlantic threadfins out there too.
if you don't know what those are google it,they are cool looking fish and most mistake them for snappers when they are being chased.

It's refreshing to see some large bluefish still around. I hear they are tight to the bunker schools, out in the Sound. Same thing in NJ. More bunker than anything else, but still some larger bluefish to 10# around......People may not be getting the numbers of bass, and from time to time you hear fishermen complain about big blues "getting in the way".....

Large blues provide rod bending action during the summer doldrums. I'll take the fight of a few 10-15 # blues any day over a bass that size.......Good work Roddy. :HappyWave:

Was out fluking on Saturday and pulled up a 6-7# fluke on the first drift. As I go to net this fluke I see this 12-15lb bluefish swimming half dead in circles on the surface. My guess he was improperly released by one of the two boats trolling bunker spoons near me.

yes it is,my friend and I met up and the gators were beating the crap out of my roundnoser,I only landed 1but,was hit and hooked up so many times.
when the sun got up,they moved on,it was fun watching them slam that fat *** plug then jump and shake it out.
my buddy laughed when I pulled that piece from my bag,it was in there to test out as it never touched water before.
when he saw me getting slammed so many times he stopped laughing fast!

they are scattered all over,some days the larger ones are around,then the next morning the smaller ones are around.

I would tell them but,they would ask for a train ticket,,,,,,,,
seems to be different groups of fish,one day they have a lot of sea-lice then the next day they are brighter in color and diff sized too.
I think they are roaming around a lot.

We have some peanut bunker but havent' heard of adult bunker in weeks. As for threadfin herring how is it that you guys get herring in september when they are gone from most other areas in may? maybe that's the secret to your success those herring you lucky dog!

well,the atlantic threadfin herring likes both warm or colder water,they don't shy away from either one,they are around from may until November late.
in june they are about 3 inches long and now they are about 6 inches,I have never seen one more than 6.
there are still bunkers around but,the pods have been broken up from gators bashing on them so,I am seeing lots of packs of them like a dozen in a bunch and less.
also,threadfins like backwater areas without wave action,,,,'er they seem to anyway.

You must have a beef processing plant or some other plant that dumps a lot of blood into the area you are fishing. All we have are these little cocktail blues. They are still fish but it would be nice to run into a gator every now and then. Good job but man am I jealous!:)

You must have a beef processing plant or some other plant that dumps a lot of blood into the area you are fishing. All we have are these little cocktail blues. They are still fish but it would be nice to run into a gator every now and then. Good job but man am I jealous!:)well,it is work,since there are not many of them around one has to keep casting and casting to get into them.water is still warm but,they seem to have moved away some.

switching bucktails for either heavier or lighter since the fish are moving in or out with some staging.
then there are some nights when they either are either shut off or not there.
I just make it look easy.
I move around[in a small area] and fish a spot with obstructions for a while and I will move to another area with a diff obstruction and work it.
mostly I do find a couple of fish on the structures in a small area.
this is pertaining to bucktails,with plugs I work above said structures and they can be there too so,I am working it hard,staying on it.
sort of playing 2 hands of cards on the same table.

well,thats due to the cooling waters,the gators have moved out of the rivers and into the harbors.
they don't like to fight the current with the cooler water,it burns too much energy plus they are built different and have different metabolisms than the bass do.
as for the bass they do good in cold water so,they will stay in the current even with water temps at 45 degrees F.

also even though the bunkers are still around seems like nothing is bothering them,the herring have shown up and the fish prefer a slimmer bait.

I watched the bunkers this morning swimming around and the herring were getting beat up,bunkers didn't even scatter once.
just the way it is I guess.
I got some on smaller wood but,with the lighter gear I like to throw plastic plugs/rubber/bucktails.
good you got into some and no offence taken,,,all my big sticks are washed,oiled and up on the rack for the winter.
time for the lighter sticks to play.

As with all of us in life, we all reach the point where we have to say "Farewell".
Capt. Dan after 37 seasons has decided to retire.
Capt. Dan for those who know him, was the hardest working Night Striped Bass fishermen on the coast. I've never met a more dedicated person to what he does in my life, I only wish he had started with us sooner.

Dan made his bones early on learning the fishery from Capt. Marty Haines (Sea Pigeon) in Perth Amboy, working deck and all the while taking in all the aspects of becoming a Captain....An Old School guy till the end, Dan still fished numbers, not spots on the plotter. He also learned much about Striper fishing from Capt. Jerry Cerilo who used to run the Freddy C. Taking what he learned and bringing it to another level.
After many years working on the Angler and building his business Dan came to work for me in 2012. Many things have changed since the Glory days of Night Striper fishing when 200 fish a night were common!
Dan's no non-cents approach to the business was a plus and earned him much respect among his peers, including me. An amazing Man to watch in the ship yard as he never took a break....Eating a sandwich with one hand and running a sander with the other!

You will be missed Capt. I wish you all the Happiness in the World where ever your life takes you.....Fair winds and smooth sailing my Friend, it was a pleasure working with you.

I remember some of those Glory Days....I looked forward to that every Spring and Fall.....night fishing for striped bass.....you had a few boats in the Bay going out for bass every night...when the fishing was good........
There used to be so much interest in bass fishing, and the catching part was so great....the boats were often railed.....if you got stuck in traffic after work and got there late....forget it.....you would be lucky to squeeze on board.

Now, 2015...you're lucky to have 2 party boats fishing the bay for bass at night....my how times have changed.....:(

The mates would save the choicest spots for the regulars....more than once guys would gripe about that...:argue:

but that was how it was....we all accepted it....and dealt with it.........just like when a guy got physically tossed off a jetty.....He did not go and file a police report...or whine on the internet about it.....(there was no internet to whine on...it was all message boards back then)
He dusted himself off.....chalked it up to experience, learned from it...and became a better fisherman...because someone gave him the harshness/roughness he needed at that moment.....kind of a "school of hard knocks" learning experience.....:thumbsup:

it's river fishing,it's different from the beach,the fish stay inside where bait likes to hang/hide.
lots of backwater to stay in,some of it's deep and some is shallow,they will be on the shallows getting warm sun and then go deep at night.
water is still warm too at 50 degrees f.
I only fish at night and find them in the deeper holes low in the current.
I am sure they are in the rivers where you are.

that was the month I always fish for them and they were bigger in april,mostly about 12-14 inches.
that night myself and my fishing partner were out there fishing for them and we noticed something strange.
we started to get lots of hits that would make our line go slack.
tommies always pulled down softly and the line would not go slack.
quickly I discovered why,they were not tommies,they were bass that were up to 20 inches.
I learned fast that when the line went slack you crank and yank then you'd hook them.
ever since then,there has been bass around here all year.
perhaps it has something to do with being inside LIS.
of the 10 rivers I fish I have found them in all of them wintering over.
other people I know fish in the small rivers and fish them in the nooks/crannies and that's all winter too.
I really don't know why they stay around here but,they do.
it could even be because they were born there.
I know one thing,I can tell a fish that has come in from outside,they are shaped diff and have sea-lice on them.
really wish I knew what the story is.

I'll tell you what,all the places I have gone that have the deeper water next to shallow have produced and I have not seen any signs of anyone fishing at all.
the only one I know that is and catching is a friend of mine and he is doing them with krocodiles during the day.

Well thats not the case in NJ lol. The backwaters here are dead except for a few places in S Jersey. It's a shame too because we have a bunch of areas in the back that must be similar to where you are fishing. Bridges that have flats leading to a deep channel where they should be. Bulkheads where there are flats and grass beds leading out to channels. Back bay sod banks that cover dozens of small creeks that should hold early or late season stripers.
All dead and not holding anything any more like they used to. I really think most of our NJ resident fish are dead. I remember reading a thread here somewhere about it. Also remember reading a thread about how the fish congregate in certain areas in Ct in the winter. If you ever come to NJ and want to see for yourself give me a buzz. I guarantee a disappointing trip! You will wonder if you have lost your touch as you get skunked time after time.
Anyways, great to see someone still catching in the back and tight lines for next year.

I was under the impression that jersey ,with it's miles of beaches would also have lots of rivers dumping out through those beaches.
also thought there was a ton of backwater areas that would hold bait and such,marshes and sandy saltponds.I guess I am under the wrong impression?
we have that here and some fish stay all winter.water is still 48 degressF which they still feed actively.
will still take plugs[small]and feed on top too.

I was under the impression that jersey ,with it's miles of beaches would also have lots of rivers dumping out through those beaches.
also thought there was a ton of backwater areas that would hold bait and such,marshes and sandy saltponds.I guess I am under the wrong impression?
we have that here and some fish stay all winter.water is still 48 degressF which they still feed actively.
will still take plugs[small]and feed on top too.

I remember a night I had in one of our back areas where the back meets the front, conditions exactly like you describe, I hit it just right. Had 106 fish, (with about 75% of them being large blues), the rest bass close to legal size or above. That only happened because sardines came into an area, and the fish were feeding heavily on them.

The fishing was so great I went every night after that for the next 7. It didn't even last a week, slowly petering out after a few days.

Still, I was glad that I was able to be there at the right time. Also glad to put a few friends into the fantastic bite as well. Otherwise, no one would have believed me, :) as we were part of a very small group fishing that bite, at that time. (There is a benefit to being careful about how much you put out there on the internet, or in only disclosing the intel, after the bite is long dead.) :learn:

It was a night to remember. I'll have to check my log but I think it was Spring 2010. Every year since then I have religiously fished that time of year hoping for a repeat. That action hasn't happened for me with that degree of robustness, since.

Now, those nights are few and far between.
There was the great jetty bite in the Winter of 2011-12, where you could actually catch 20-50 fish if you fished all night...and there were enough high teen...low 20's...and 30# bass around to make it interesting....but that was IMO a climate and weather aberration that "delayed" many fish from moving on with their usual Southern migration.

I think, as some here have said....once you see how things are overall in NJ...you might appreciate those CT waters a little more......
We did have our Glory days here........fish upon fish for weeks on end......
But I don't think those days will ever return to NJ....as some of the old timers and I remember them..bites lasting for weeks instead of minutes of hours...although I hope I am wrong....

** There are those now who would disagree with me....I still maintain that these isolated recent bites,.......with at most a 5 hour window....aren't close to what some of us were experiencing 10-15 years ago. Unfortunately, with the passage of time, those older bites become forgotten...and the new "epic" becomes "Yeah I fished all day at the beach, had an hour of blitz action, we got 10 stripers each, it was epic!"
And with the passage of time, the new blitz fishing becomes the frame of reference for all fishing forward from that moment.

Monty doesn't fish Jersey anymore.
And I am not sure Dark fishes anywhere but from his chair now, and although that is in NJ, the closest whitewater is his toilet (may be a bit crowded fishing that area).

Here's a Bass that inhaled an Afterhours Pencil September this year. It looked like it came out of the Bubble Weed and clobbered it.
About 20 feet from me, really was an adrenaline moment after many casts with not a bump.

This was the glory days of island beach. Circa 1992-98. Much different now though we did see some nice fish this Fall.

well,we have lots of herring and several diff species of them along with some pnuts that are and maybe still around,I have not been back out since it got cold.
as of the last session there were still some around,not a lot but, enough.
they may be gone by now.
also we still have schools of very big bunkers around,they are like 14 inches now.
I guess the cold water will kill them off soon or maybe it has already,planning a recon mission tonight to go out and sling some rubber.
water is @ 42 degrees F right now,still will bite good.
will see what happens.

I only use plastic plugs at the start and the end of the season.
when may rolls in or the migration gets here I will be on big wood and big sticks,the light stuff gets put back on the rack.
now the fish are on peanuts and the slim,plastic plugs do the job.
also not hunting large fish since there seem not to be any but,come may,,,oh baby,,,big wood comes out to play.
IAH,the lighter rigs were my normal fishing gear but as of about 18 years ago,I learned a good lesson about fishing with lighter gear,I vowed never to be undergunned again during the times when adult bunkers are around.

this is the magnum size.
