There is a guy who fishes up by you I think. He is in Ct too. He has a blog that's interesting. His name is RichZ. The other day he was talking about stripers only hitting rubber of a certain size. If it was too big they would not hit it. So I guess that makes sense.

^^^ That is absolutely true for where I fish. There are places where it's only spearing and minnows. You throw a 5 or 6 inch shad you will catch. You will double your catching by just keeping it simple and using the basic fin-S. Too many fellas want to complicate things. KISS.

Can I believe my eyes? The famous heavyhooksetter is now changing presentations to match the size of the bait. Using the "plastic for boys"? The end of the world must be near.
Just kidding you, man, you are a good fisherman and I enjoy your reports. Sometimes you have to change the size of the presentation to match the hatch. I do it all the time.

I do it all the time.well, right now I consider it a continuation of late fall and in late fall I put the big stocks back in the rack and take down the lighter winches[300 series shimano cardiff reels] and throw the small stuff,,,simply because the larger fish seemed to vanish.
every so often I will get a 20 on small plastic plugs and then comes the time to show skill in fighting a larger fish on light tackle.
I prefer to fish for larger with big wood though,,,gotts be flexible.

LOL,if I lived near an aquarium,I'd tell them to stock it with bigger fish.
I always carry both and I throw both.
now, when I have my bigsticks out I only use big wood or 3 oz BT's mostly.
I do have a few large rubber that's 9-12 inch shads with 3 oz leadheads.
when they are larger fish the wood normally gets them to slam.

Lots of hungry stripers that you are catching.
would love to see those stripers in New Jersey but right now the blue fish have invaded. I think they swim away somewhere because we have so many of these giant Gators.

I would have to say it's mostly in the dark.
closer to light they do attack but, the action is short, they stop when the sun gets up too high.
same thing with the gators unless there is bait flushing out.
most times the gators are farther out away from shore in the dark then they head in close at first light.

Who? Roddy? He's just another goog who iives in Ct.
He puts his pants on one leg at a time, like the rest of us....

The thing that separates him from the rest of some of the other fishermen...is that when he DOES find fish, he exploits that pattern, night after night.... until it's done.

As a result he has some great numbers...but let's not forget all the hours he is putting in...
Roddy, I have some nice pics from this year....I helped Pebbles get her first 25...a few weeks ago...she out fished all the "sharpies" on the beach that night....will post a few pics when I get a chance.....

Hope life is treating you well...M8!

I never thought of that idea.
one does not need to be intimidated by me for any reason unless they mean me harm then I get the idea across without any misunderstanding.
one of the reasons Monty and I started this thread was to create a large amount of images that those whom participate can go back and look at,see and then remember catching the fish in the shot as well as something for our history in fishing.
personally,I like to look at an old fish pic and then go back remembering what I used, where I was and how it felt to catch.
it's like a visual logbook of sorts.

another important thing is experience,i have fished for bass with lures for 36 years and I learned every time I went out and kept the techniques I used to catch those fish.
some of the guys I fished with since I was a kid will tell you if you ask them who do you know that can work a bucktail,,,they will say my name.
same goes for a large piece of wood too.
I am at a level now where I want to weed out the smaller fish and catch the larger fish.
if that tech does not work on several nights then I will scale down because it is obvious there are no larger fish around.
right now,it is time to take the big sticks off the rack and use them and use them I shall, thats what they are there for.

well,I am much humbled by someone speaking about me in such a good way.
when it's time to fish,I fish and all my years of fishing I have spent many nights out there when no one else would try,I have lost many hours of sleep in this thing we do.
when the bite is on and the pattern is on,I am there and I stay on them until it is done.

Regards from me and Pebbles to you and your wife.:HappyWave:you are totally correct.
lots of guys go fishing but, they don't learn anything from the outing.
I always do.
I keep that in mind and in logbook.
I learn an area and then use the knowledge to my advantage and hit it hard.
when I make a plug,I make it with one idea in mind,,,not to be pretty and not to be intricate,I keep it simple and the other thing is size/action.
some I want for digging down somewhat and then some I want for surface waggling then I could want a plug to do both so I build accordingly.
I always watch some of the guys that look like they belong in a cabelas catalog and they don't catch any better because they have expensive gear.
then I make them watch me slam some steel to meat.
I hear them say what is he using?,,,some have even came over to see and they say "I can't believe these fish are hitting such a large plug".
well, they are chasing bunkers and bunkers are big so,it's kinda a simple idea to go large and it works.

yes they have, tons of them, they are also eating like crazy.
they even follow my swimmers on to and some even hit.
anyhow,I am not after them, the larger fish are seemingly moving out, water temp is @ 70f now.

So jealous that you have Gators in the summertime. What do you think it is that brings them in to that 70 degree water. I thought that would be too hot for them, no?

gators like warm water,70 is about optimum for them.
around here they start to move out when it gets down to 52 or so.
so far I have not seen anyone catch one but, hear of them being caught.

I got my best one in 1981,it was 45+ inches and the weight was 22-1/2 lbs.

they are actually late this year, normally they show up right before memorial day and hang around all summer if there is food for them.
they don't leave until the water temp hits around 50.

still some bass around which is strange since the larger fish are always gone by july 12th or so.
lots of small bass around from like 12-20 inches and they are not vanishing when the gators make their appearances each tide.
normally they are gone when they show up.

That is awesome! in New Jersey the captains say the big blues are offshore because they are spawning now.
I have been reading the reports for the last 2 weeks and all they are catching is Pee-wee blues 1 - 3 pounds. so if they do spawn this time of year, I'm wondering why is it that they haven't left from where you are fishing? Thanks and congrats.

well,I would think that they have spawned already by the time they show up here.
looking at the pix they have no bellies and the bodies are not thick yet.
my best guess is they already did in these parts, also we are inside a huge cove so,they come around Montauk and from Rhody's direction straight into the sound.
I imagine they spawn enroute from outside since they are already in open ocean/water.

^^ Nice, maybe because of the full moon?
I have fish it during all periods just never got a fish to even boil behind it.
even when the fish were smashing bait, they would not look at it.as soon as I switched plugs,it would hit the water and a fish would slam it.
it actually made me shy away from making any white plugs.
I even had another large swimmer that was all white,I repainted it grey with brown top,you can see it in the yapper of a gator a couple of post ago.
they never looked at that one either.

Happy to see you're doing so well Roddy. We were crossing the Throgs Neck bridge during the daytime a while ago. friends who live up that way have been having great night bluefish and bass action as the adult bunker are there in high numbers. The Western Sound, the CT rivers, Montauk, and the Hudson River areas seem to be the best places for big blues so far this Fall....with NJ getting short-changed, unless you're on a boat fishing the Mud Hole... friends who fish NJ every night had bigger blues for 2 nights in a row, and then they vanished....

I considered coming up your way, or at least to the Western Sound, for the night action.....seems the rivers by you are the best bet as you can reach them better...in the Western Sound you need to be nearer deep water for best success......We'll have to chalk it up as a partial loss for NJ land fishermen this fall so far....I'm still hoping they show...I love those angry tackle busting fish.....congrats and greetings to your wife too......:HappyWave:

awesome reports you are a fishing machine.thanks for sharing. Do you ever get skunked?
well I try to stay on 'em as much as possible.
oh yes I get skunked too.
last Wednesday when I was OTW I fished a deep hole for almost 3 hrs knowing there had to be fish down there.
the previous night I got 5 out of there including a 17lb'er and a few nights before that go one that was 2 clicks under 20 on BT's.
at the end of the flood I connected with a micro bass and beat the skunk.
that Thursday night I got skunked with not a single touch.
anyhow Friday I tried for 2 hrs without a hit, didn't hang around and headed home.
sat it out the rest of the weekend.
fish either moved outside or further deep inside.
hoping this cold blast doesn't kill the late fall bite so much.
I know a few spots that hold resident fish but,if it gets below 42f,they don't bite.
so,keeping my fingers crossed.

yeah they are nice when they are there/willing to bite,,,lol.
no canal river fishing is all I do now.
I gave up on the surf years ago,too much open space and fish could be anywhere.
once I saw that river fishing resulted in many more fish caught,I went with it and are staying with it.

I've been following your reports for years and always enjoying them. Rubber and jigs always seem to produce during the end of the season as it gets colder. Nice going, thanks for sharing the memories.indeed they do,I suppose that's due to the cooler water.
my guess is they slow down a bit and won't chase much to conserve energy/turn to ambush much more than running down prey.
at times they won't even touch the freshwater sized xrap 14's or 16-a bombers.
then the next night they are all over it.
when using bt's and rubber you make the lure come to them and they attack it as it comes to them or by them.
that's my idea on it.
glad you enjoy the pix,I enjoy sharing them.
ya know something,I actually can remember almost every one of them and where I caught them.

X2! Awesome reports you are lucky to be in an area where there are so many fish, congrats!I guess that's true although,I am usually the only one out there fishing from October until the end.
the backwater pockets are where the fish are laying, lots of spots to lay inside, under, over,or behind obstructions around corners waiting to attack food.
that's where you'll find them.
sort of like spots where you'd find smallmouth bass lurking.

His shop was in an old barn located on Great Herring Pond in Cedarville Mass. Where he operated an old peddle lathe to make his lures.
It was a one man operation in the mid 40s.He was well known and they caught a lot of fish.On the box it said "Heavy enough to get out there"

cool. The last ones look a little like gizzard shad?
ya know what, you're right, didn't think of it but yes.
seems that color combo was killer last year.
I had a plug and a friend of mine wanted to test swim it.
I had it rigged to test out so,I told him to clip it on and sling it out there.
he did and liked the swim,,,then a sudden crash and drag peeled,,at that point I said to him,pay me now,it's yours.
he totally hammered fish with that plug almost all year, wish I had it now to take a pic and show it.
it is beaten to death and still swims great almost no paint on it.
ya know what?,,,I have a pic of it new, before I sold it to him.
