It seems every time you turn around they are closing more and more areas to fishing. Not good.

The last thing this column should do is beat on a dead horse, but this was such a rare horse that perhaps a whack or two may ensure its revival.
In March, it was reported the Stoney Creek Lake (Old City Lake) would not re-open in 2009. and parks superintendent Tim Johnson’s reasons were given. They were essentially economic, and Johnson pointed out that there still would be a place to fish locally, every day in the week. Furthermore, he suggested the venue might re-open in 2010, better for its rest.
Let us hope he proves right in his "prediction." For what is omitted in the present closing is the common man who wants to "take a kid fishing," the theme of every outdoors organization from the Wildlife Commission to Bassmasters. We’re speaking of the man who doesn’t own a boat.
At Stoney Creek, one could rent a boat powered by a trolling motor. Any other boat at the lake had to use its trolling motor, too, making a calmer scene than the other lakes around with their bass boats consequent noise and wakes, not to mention water-skiers and ski-doos. Also, since Lake Cammack kept Old City’s water level constant, it offered the best bank fishing anywhere, not to mention a better fishery biologically.
Let us hope that when 2010 rolls around, the recreation and parks department finds ways to re-open Stoney Creek, even if it requires cuts at the other facilities. It will serve the community better, and be a better use of tax dollars, if po’ folks and novices also have good fiahing.
