Lake Cammack angler takes home hefty prize for winning redfish title

Finally, something positive about redfish. We've got a winner. And it's nothing to do with politics or House Bills to define their status.
It's about catching them in tournaments, tournaments with big prizes, and that's just what Gary Knight of the Lake Cammack community did May 23. Fishing with boat partner Rob Korlay of Cape Carteret, the angling pair took first place in the Atlantic Regional Redfish Tournament at Surf City.
Because their catch was .75 pounds heavier than any of the 45 boats entered, they're considered a shoo-in for the National Redfish championship to be held in November, most likely at a Deep South venue not yet announced.
Three-quarters of a pound might seem like a thin margin of victory, but actually it's huge. Because only two fish make up a catch, the winner is usually determined by ounces or half-ounces. The two fish must measure between 18 and 27 inches in length, so they won't be that heavy. The Knight / Korlay team's fish weighed 7 and 7.22 ounces.
As it was, they won it all. In addition to the tournament, the 7.22-pounder took the Big Fish prize, plus the team won the Calcutta, a side bet among the participants.
For their efforts, they won a $30,000 Ranger Banshee fishing boat, $500 in cash from Cabala and $1,500 in fishing gear from Rapala. Some of that gear will come in handy later, as artificial lures must be used in these events. Knight / Korlay used topwater and Gulp baits.
It was quite a day for the men and proof once again that Alamance County guys can fish with the best of them.
