Some churned up structure out there!

The first major Atlantic storm of the season dwindled to a Category 1 as it moved up the East Coast yesterday, still churning up surf and remaining a threat to swimmers.

Hurricane Bill’s maximum sustained winds were near 85 mph last night. Earlier Saturday, the storm closed beaches on the South Shore and in New York (http://www.newsday.com/topics/New_York) City, a disappointment on one of a wet summer’s few remaining weekends.

The Robert Moses (http://www.newsday.com/topics/Robert_Moses) State Park beach was shut down Saturday and will remain closed through Sunday as the high tide submerged the sand.
“The entire sand part of the park is under water,” state parks spokesman George Gorman Jr. said yesterday morning. The beach reopened later for sunbathing.
Jones Beach will be open Sunday to swimmers and sunbathers.
