I am seeing more jellyfish around now, I know what the porgutese manowar looks like, I wouldn't be stupid enough to touch that.:scared: What about the other jellyfish, the ones that look like small beanbags. They are in a lot of places in the backbays, and sometimes in the ocean. How do you guys deal with them, just ignore, and brush off? What if there are a lot of them, does that affect the fishing?

If one stings your leg or foot, you have to pee on it to take the stinging away. Seen on an episode of man vs wild. Make sure you take pics and post them here, videos will be even better.:D

People pay to see that kind of thing and you want him to give it away for free?

Seriously though. If there are a lot of jellyfish around DO NOT touch your eyes, face or private areas until you are sure your hands are clean and clear of any jellyfish remnants. When your line, especially braid, hits them it may cut into them leaving pieces of the jelly fish on your line. When you unavoidably touch your line you run the risk of transferring the pieces to your hands and then whatever else you touch. Believe me, it happens. I did not have very bad stings but they hurt all the same.

If possible keep a bottle of plain white vinegar with you or in your truck if there is a bad infestation in the area you are fishing. THis acid neutralizes the sting.

If you are stung by a jelly fish, you might feel or notice:

Skin rash or swelling
Burning feeling on stung area
Pain

What to do if you get a jellyfish sting
http://www.healthybali.com/images/uploaded_files/jellyfish_rinse.gif1. Rinse with sea water. This will deactivate the microscopic jelly fish stingers stuck on you. Do not urinate or rinse with fresh water, this will cause the pain worse because the stingers will activate more toxins. Do not use oil or gasoline, this will irritate the skin and worsen the wound.

http://www.healthybali.com/images/uploaded_files/jellyfish_compress.gif2. Apply vinegar compress. This is actually the best way to neutralize the toxin.

http://www.healthybali.com/images/uploaded_files/jellyfish_shave.gif3. Remove remaining stinger, when the pain has subsided. You can use a tweezer to remove visible stingers or shave. For shaving you can use a razor or any handy straight edge, i.e. the blunt edge of a knife. Coat the affected area with sand and seawater or shaving cream then scrape away the remaining stingers. You can also place sticky tape on your skin and pull, like waxing. This can be done repeatedly. Do not touch the stung area with your bare hands, the remaining stingers can pierce your hand. Do not rub because the toxing may spread from the existing stingers. Do not bother removing any stinger stuck deep inside your joint, seek medical attention instead.

http://www.healthybali.com/images/uploaded_files/jellyfish_wrap.gif4. Wrap with a light bandage. Should cover above and below the stung area. Don't wrap too tight. You should be able to snug one finger between the bandage and skin easily. If you feel numb below the bandage, it means the wrap is too tight.

http://www.healthybali.com/images/uploaded_files/tablet.gif5. You can take pain relief tablets, i.e. ibuprofen, aspirin and light steroid cream, i.e. hydrocortisone cream. The symptoms should improve after 24 hours.

See a doctor if you feel or notice:

Worsening or persisting pain.
Signs of infection: spreading redness, swelling, warm on touch, oozing pus from any open wound.
Breathing difficulty.
Nausea and vomiting.
Stingers stuck deep in the joint.

How to avoid jelly fish stings

Ask the locals at beaches or waters which you are not familiar for safe places to swim.
Do not handle any unknown animals, including sponges, coral, sea worms, jellyfish, sea urchins, and spiny starfish.
You can try shuffling the bottom of the sea to scare off any jellyfish near you.
Jellyfishes usually would be found at sunrise or sunset time.
Rubber diving suits or rash guards can give protection against stings.
