DANIA BEACH, Fla., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Renowned marine wildlife artist and conservationist, Guy Harvey, will be inducted into the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Fishing Hall of Fame on October 27, 2009. The annual, star-studded ceremony and dinner will be held Tuesday, October 27 at 6 p.m. at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame in Dania Beach, Florida.
"If you have a passion for our oceans and have ever fished, you know of Dr. Guy Harvey," said Rob Kramer, IGFA president. "Through his generosity and many talents in business, science, angling and the arts, he has positively influenced a staggering number of people around the world."
Harvey, who has been a full-time marine artist since 1986, is one of five IGFA honorees who were selected for their significant contributions through angling achievements, literature, the arts, science, education, communication or administration of fishery resources. He has been a member of the IGFA Board of Trustees since 1993.
"Joining the ranks of people like Ernest Hemingway and Zane Gray is a tremendous honor," said Harvey, who now resides in the Cayman Islands.
Around the world, Harvey is known for his marine paintings, graphics, books and other artistry. In fact, he's credited with creating a whole new field of sport fishing art. "During the past 25 years, I have fished with some of the great names, but my sincerest thanks go to all the captains and their crews who put me on or in the water with some tremendous fish," said Harvey.
Born in Lippspringe, Germany on September 16, 1955 while his father was serving as a Gunnery Officer in the British Army, Harvey is a 10th generation Jamaican of English heritage as his family immigrated to Jamaica in 1664. Growing up in Jamaica, Harvey spent many hours fishing and diving with his father. He was obsessed with the creatures of the sea and began drawing pictures of the many different fish he observed.
From those early inspirations, Harvey's gift of recreating marine life propelled him from Professor of Marine Biology to a wildlife artist and photographer. He initially opted for a scientific education, earning high honors in Marine Biology at Aberdeen University in Scotland in 1977. He continued his formal training at the University of West Indies, where he obtained a Doctorate in Fisheries Management.
A vocal proponent of catch-and-release, Harvey generously donates artwork, time and funds for numerous institutions and conservation groups, including the Guy Harvey Research Institute established at Nova Southeastern University in 1999. In 2008, Harvey created the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, which supports marine conservation, research and education efforts.
"Through hands-on experience, Guy truly understands the needs of our oceans and the necessity for all of us to become involved in the stewardship of them," said Kramer. "Panama Paradise - A Tribute to Tropic Star Lodge" is a photography book that focuses on fishing and diving in one of Panama's most scenic and remote locations. The other book is "Fishes of the Open Ocean," a guide to the fish that live in the top 100 meters of the ocean. Harvey co-wrote the book with Dr. Julian Pepperell from Australia, a marine biologist, and took the photographs for the illustrations.
On Wednesday, October 28, from 6 to 10 p.m., Harvey and featured artist Kent Ullberg will host a celebration of Harvey's induction into the IGFA that will raise funds for the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation. Dr. Harvey will speak with guests about his current conservation efforts regarding sharks and other marine species. During the evening, there will be a raffle and a live and silent auction with prizes including fine artwork, memorabilia, gifts, trips, and dinners just to name a few. Tickets are $250 per person or $2,000 per table, with proceeds benefiting the foundation.
