from time to time I catch some fat bass but generaly speaking my bass have been thinner and the ones I have kept have empty bellys or just a few crabs.

I agree with Jimbob, but would like to add that when they are gorging themselves on adult bunker right after the spawn is when they seem the fattest to me. You can have an early spring bass at 46" that weighs 25lbs, and a late spring bass that size filled with bunker that weighs 35. I don't know if you would qualify that as a yearly thing or a seasonal thing.

Well for the fall runs the only time I have seen real fat bass, footballs, is when there are a lot of peanuts around. Less peanuts, less fat, jmo.

Even in the spring this year, the truly large ones seemed few and far between, with most fish averaging 25.
