Long Island beach-hugging fishermen are hooked on bass

Now's the time when Long Island (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Long+Island) beach-hugging bass anglers get competitive. Since mid-September, the East End Bait & Tackle shop in Hampton Bays (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Hampton+Bays) has been keeping score on its surf striper tourney contest, which runs until Dec. 5. Meredith O'Leary (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Meredith+O'Leary) of Hampton Bays has been the leading female entrant with a 17-pounder caught at the end of last month. Head out to the tackle shop and sign up for $25 to get in the running. For details, phone the shop at (631) 728-1744.
Then there's the Montauk (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Montauk) surfcasting tournament, which is geared for East Hampton (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/East+Hampton) residents. This one also began in mid-September but it closes Dec. 1. Weigh stations are Paulie's Tackle Shop and the Star Island Marina, both in Montauk.
Fred Kalkstein, one of the planning committee members, ticked off the five categories in this tournament. These include the men's wader division, which for more than a month has been led by the 50.52-pound biggie reeled in by Mike Milano (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Mike+Milano).
Mary Ellen Kane (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Ellen+Kane) has set the high mark so far in the women's wader category with a 34.42-pound specimen, while Ban McCarron (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Ban+McCarron)'s 26.72-pound entry leads the 12-to-17 youth division.
A six-week contest spearhead by the Woodcleft Fishing Station, which is on Freeport (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Freeport+(New+York))'s Nautical Mile, shuts down Nov. 29. Until recently, the "Just Dear" crew's 36.24-pounder has been tops on the leaderboard. Last week, the "No Regrets" team weighed in a 24-1/2-pound striped bass contender.
As for fly fishermen, they enjoyed the Catskill streams over the summer. Many will probably be making a pilgrimage this weekend for the third annual edition of the Arts of the Angler Show staged at the Ethan Allen Inn just off I-84 in Danbury (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Danbury), Conn. (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Connecticut) This expo is organized by and benefits the Catskill Fly Fishing Center (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Catskill+Fly+Fishing+Center) and Museum.

These special sessions range from one to three hours and cost from $40 to $75.
Free clinics will be held throughout each day, such as Fran Verdoliva (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Fran+Verdoliva)'s tips about catching Atlantic salmon in New York (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/New+York)'s Lake Ontario (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Lake+Ontario) tributaries. Vendors will display, for example, classic and vintage tackle and equipment; fly tying materials; sportsmen's books; guide services; and info about popular fishing destinations.
Door open at 9 a.m. and close tomorrow at 5 p.m. and on Sunday at 4p.m. General admission is $5.
