Is there any type of sea bass which can be bought and sold in NJ or sold at restaurants? I went out for my son's birthday tonight and sea bass was on the menu. I'll have to try to remember what type it was but I thought this was illegal.

thats black sea bass not striped bass perfectly legal

Most likely Chilean Sea Bass which is actually the Patagonian Toothfish.

This species is severely overfished, mostly by illegal fishing and should be avoided if you care about sustainability in fisheries.

That is it! Chilean Sea Bass. I did not order it. I figured anything being sold that is bass is not a good thing.
