Is there a certain formula you should follow to get the right weight of a lure to the weight of your braided line? I want to improve my casting distance and thought that maybe there should be some sort of corrolation between the two.

Absolutely not.

Find the weight rating on your rod. If it is something like 2-5 oz then a 1/2 oz bucktail is going nowhere. Some rods will throw lighter lures efficiently enough even if the rating is high. All rods have their sweet spot though. Find a lure weight that throws the best and you found the sweet spot. Just make sure you don't exceed the rating. Some rods have a little give and are rated lower than the max to keep you safe but going too heavy is a good way to snap the tip.

One thing about distance is the load you put on the rod. Make sure the rod is loading correctly when you cast it. If it isn't bending backward when you start your forward motion then either you are casting wrong or are throwing to light a lure.

Another thing about casting far is the fact that it isn't needed all that often. Tossing a lure as far as you can get it is usually a waste of time. Granted you want to cover as much water as possible but the majority of fish are taken pretty close to shore. There are some situations where distance is absolutely necessary but that is not the norm.
