View Full Version : Swans in the Navesink

Got a call from Papa Angelo this morning. He takes note every year that there is a huge group of white swans grouping up in the back of the Navesink river by the Oceanic bridge. Maybe getting ready for the trip south.

Whatever it is, they get together back there for 2 weeks, and it's an amazing sight. :wow: When Angelo first called me last week, there were 4 there. Today there were 25, and the number may reach 30 or more.

Any parents who have little children and want them to see a cool slice of the yearly swan migration, maybe you want to take them down there soon. They may only be there for another few days or so.

A Dad took his little daughter there this morning, she really enjoyed it.

Thanks to Papa Angelo for bringing it to my attention. :HappyWave:

Just got yelled at by OGB....

"What the heck are ya doin putting swans on a fishin website?!!! :argue:
Have you lost your frikkin mind??? :kooky:
What are you turning into the PETA guy!! :burn:
You better toughen up and no more of this touchy feely stuff, people might think you're nuts or something!"

Yep you're right, and you're not a grouchy guy either! :HappyWave: Where's Killie to tell me how pleasant and mellow you are? ;)

In my defense, if people suggest a thread and I think it has merit for the people in that area, up it goes.

Except for PETA, anything metrosexual or in the spam category, etc. :plastered:;)

[Look for our new video forums, "birds have feelings too" :ROFLMAO and how to close down a beach for half a season for a few non-existent birds. :kooky: :2flip: ]

The best window to hit the fish now is a one hour shot, dawn and dusk. 75% of the numbers mentioned are caught during those windows.

For 2 months I've been neglecting work and everything else to get down there. Work has suffered, I've run out of excuses to give people why I'm late. :embarassed: And we're talkin about bass from 15-27", most of them being 15-22". One or 2 larger thrown in for those on the Red-X. Nothing like you guys had at Demo for 3 glorious weeks. :dribble:
So you're right, my best days/nights were back in Nov when I would drive down and sleep in the van for the weekend, nomad style. ;)

I'm so jealous of those OGB type, OFFC retired farts :HappyWave: and all those other guys who live 10 minutes away from the water.

Yup, I suck. :don't know why:

Sometime you have to do things for the girls!

Pebbles took my Mom down there to find the swans today. They succeeded, and even got a chance to scout the water out front for me. Love that girl.:kiss:

And judging by the views and some other comments, some people did get out there to see them. That's why I'm in the Effumall club. Eff ya's all! :2flip: ;)

What was more impressive to us were the seagulls and how they were flying directly in front of us to eat the bread. I have added a pic of that as well.

Hey Dark the birdwatcher, there was a rare new species of penguin disconvered in Antartica, in case you're interested.:ROFLMAO ;)

http://www.treehugger.com/all-black-penguin.jpg
Photo via Andrew Evans of the National Geographic (http://blogs.nationalgeographic.com/blogs/intelligenttravel/2010/03/todays-pic-rare-black-penguin.html).
King Penguins (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/10/up-to-three-quarters-of-antarctic-penguins-will-die-two-degree-temperature-rise.php) are notorious for their prim, tuxedoed appearance -- but a recently discovered all-black penguin seems unafraid to defy convention. In what has been described as a "one in a zillion kind of mutation," biologists say that the animal has lost control of its pigmentation (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/01/rare-brown-and-white-panda-could-be-the-result-of-inbreeding.php), an occurrence that is extremely rare.

Feeding Bald Eagles...

This is amazing ... the most beautiful bird being fed by man!

In January the weather was so cold that the bald eagles were cruising over our houses looking for helpless cats to make a quick meal.
Some kind souls decided to feed the eagles down at Goose Spit so they would survive the cold spell. Here's what happened!
A former teaching colleague took these photos in front of his home. They are incredible!

Rich just told me that Finchaser called to report swans in the Manasquan river. The one they are talking about is called "Swanny" the swan. There are a few people that feed him, but not Finchaser. I had to say that because I hope he doesn't get mad at me.

I don't think Finchaser is a swan lover, but you never know, as Rich says.

If anyone wants to see Swanny Swan, he is back for the season in the Manasquan river. They thought he was gay but last year he got a girlfriend, so now Swanny and his girlfriend might be parents soon. Thanks for calling that in to Rich, Finchaser, and I hope you are not too mad at Rich. When he goes fishing with you he is a much happier person the next day. :HappyWave:

The guy's at the marina were sure proud when they found out Swannie was not light in the loafers. He sleeps on the dock under the shed at night making a mess. When I chase him he flares up hisses at me ,sh_ts on the dock and walks away.

Penguins

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins

On the ice in Antarctica - where do they go ?

Wonder no more ! ! !

It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic

Bird which lives an extremely ordered and complex life.

The penguin is very committed to its family and will

Mate for life, as well as maintaining a form of

Compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life.

http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=13277&d=1299389844

If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other

Members of the family and social circle have been

Known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial

Wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for

The dead bird to be rolled into and buried.

The male penguins then gather in a circle

Around the fresh grave and sing:

"Freeze a jolly good fellow"

"Freeze a jolly good fellow."

"Then they kick him in the ice hole."

http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=13276&d=1299389843

You really didn't believe that I know anything about penguins, did you?

DarkSkies
03-05-2011, 01:23 PM
I don't see anything there about how after he's buried in the ice, the other penguins go to the local Anarctica deli and get some FRESH pork roll sammiches to eat in his honor.

Or they went to Asbury park, found Speedy's lathe , and spent the afternoon with BIG WOOD. :scared:

Or they went up to LI, dragged Surfstix out of his house, and took him to the go-go bar. . And picked up Monty and his cats to give the dancers the seal of approval....
On the way into the club, they saw Dogfish and Mick2360 coming back from a codfish trip smelling like cod, and Jonthepain coming back from a hunting trip, with Wile E Coyote strapped to his front bumper. :viking:They all went inside, proceeded to show the dancers their BIG WOOD, and then had a blast talking about big fish stories and the one that got away. :fishing:

After the refreshing time ogling the strippers and the g-strings.....the mooks above ran into Rich Swiss at the back of RB. They called Killie and asked him to come down, but he said "dont bother calling me unless you're catching 20#ers!".

They then decided to all go down to SH (except for Killie :beatin:) did the long walk death march, (with Bababooey and Storminsteve following close behind with their notebooks and GPS plotters) :ROFLMAOand looked and looked for some fish, only to find none....the only souls on the beach was Wish4fish and GJB, throwing clams and bunker in the dirty cold water....;) :HappyWave: catching skate after skate...

After seeing all this effort for nothing!!!!! their exalted leader the Grouchy Basstard, said: " I can't believe you guys really fish here, ain't worth the walk, you guys are out of your minds to take this walk, the fishin really suxx up here.....:don't know why:

But they all had a good time, and on the walk home ran into the OldFartsFishinClub and Surfwalker, trying to avoid the internet fishing hordes...

And....on the walk home the 2 newest of the Penguin Phishing team, Rip and Cardoc, kept falling over the same log, prompting the Old Grouchy one to say: " Hey have you guys been drinking :plastered: or are you just 2 goofy googans....in my day when we came across stumps, we jumped over them like they were hurdles.....:argue:  And when we caught a big fish, we didn't need to parade it

all around the internet either!!!! http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/images/icons/icon8.png :headbang: :viking:

To be continued.......:d :fishing:

You're slackin off there, Old Grouchy. :moon: :HappyWave:

10 years ago dark was obsessed about clams. Kept stashes of them hidden all over the bay in case the belford guy ran out. When we ran out when the bite was hot at night he would take a short ride and magically come back with some. Don't know how he did it but he saved us more than a few times. Sometimes the bite was so good we had to cut the clams in half to keep fishing. He said stank clams were the best. I know he doesn't fish them now but he was up there with Swiss, Yamo and the rest of them with his clam catches. Now I see he was holding out on us. We should have been using bread. ;)

^^^^^ cool looking pic. Speaking of black, has anyone seen the black ducks around lately? I think they are called loons? They are diving near the inlets but no bigger fish are around. what bait do you suppose they are diving on at this time of year?

lostatsea
12-13-2014, 11:21 AM
Yes they are loons. Some of the last birds of the year. Not sure what they eat in your area. In my area they dive on whitebait and small crabs.
A little about them

Saw this video of northern gannets and heard they were all over the bay. Lots of bunker, or is it herring too?
