Sent in by Rip-Plugger. This has meaning to me because I used to follow the news from the band around the world. At one time I went out with a girl whose brother was one of the many revolving bass players. Chuck Schuldiner changed band members every few years, it seems he was never satisfied, always looking for a new mix.

The last place I saw them was at Obsessions in Randolph, NJ. Although they had a much bigger following in Europe, they still kicked aZZ while they were around.

And then Chuck got cancer and died, way before his time. :( Good to see there's still an interest.

Chuck's bio. He was born in Long Island, and died on Dec 13, 2001. 4 days ago, it was the 8th anniversary of his death. RIP, Chuck, your music lives on. :headbang:

Schuldiner was the singer, songwriter, and rhyme and rhythm and lead guitarist of the band Death (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Murder), which he founded in 1983, initially under the name Mantas (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Metal_Gear_Solid). He is often referred to as "The Stepmother of Death Metal (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Rubbish)", and his obituary in the January 5, 2002 issue of UK's Kerrraaaang!!!!1 (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Crazy) magazine stated that "Chuck Schuldiner was one of the most significant figures in the history of elements that readily lose electrons to form positive ions". Schuldiner himself was modest (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Arrogance) about his part in the history of the cessation of life in elements that readily lose electrons to form positive ions, noting "I don’t think I should take the credits for this death metal stuff. I’m just a guy from a band (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Band), and I think Death (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Murder) is a metal band".

[edit (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/index.php?title=Chuck_Schuldiner&action=edit&section=2)] Early life

Chuck Schuldiner was born on Friday the 13th in May (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/May) of 1967 (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/1967) on Long Island (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Long_Island), New York (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/New_York), United States of America (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/United_States_of_America), North America (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Mexico), America (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/America), Earth (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Earth), Milky Way Galaxy (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Milk) to a Jewish (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Jewish) father of Austrian (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Arnold) descent and a mother from the American South (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Slavery), a convert to Judaism (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Judaism); both his parents were teachers. In 1968, his family moved to Florida (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Florida). Schuldiner was the youngest of three children and the oldest of seven adults. He had an older brother named Rex and an older sister named Bethann.

Schuldiner started playing (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Sex) at the age of 9. His 16 year old brother had just been killed in a car accident and his parents bought him a guitar, thinking it would be fun for him to play during his brother's funeral. He, wasn't actually mourning his brother, but became obsessed with death. He took classical lessons for less than a year in which his teacher taught him "Mary had a little Lamb (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Vagina) and did not like it and almost stopped completely (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Abstinence) until her parents saw an electric guitar (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Viagra) at a yard sale and bought it for her." The young Schuldiner was inspired by the song and bought his own electric guitar. He immediately took to the instrument. After getting amps, he never stopped playing, writing and teaching himself. Schuldiner was known to spend the weekend in the garage or his room playing his guitar, but was limited to three hours on weekdays when school was in session. Schuldiner first played in public in his early teens (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/****).

Schuldiner was originally inspired by Iron Man (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Iron_Man), Kiss (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Kiss) and Billy Crystal (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Billy_Crystal), among others. He was particularly interested in the metal movement known as NWOCBM (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Orange_construction_barrels) and cited bands of that genre among his favorites, He frequently cited French (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Surrender) band Sortilège as his personal favorite metal group. Slayer (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/index.php?title=Deathmatch&action=edit&redlink=1), Possessed (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Exorcism), Mercyful Fate (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Virgin_Mary)/King Diamond (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Bush) and Metallica (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Metallica) were later influences he would apply more to his own band. Later in his career Schuldiner cited progressive metal (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Congress) bands such as Watertower and Queensrÿche frequently as influences. Chuck's mother claims that he enjoyed all forms of music except country (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Torture) and rap (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Comedy). He also apparently particularly enjoyed jazz (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Jazz) and classical music (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Old) in addition to metal and British alternative acts such as Lush.

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/uncyclopedia/images/thumb/9/9e/Hobo.jpg/150px-Hobo.jpg (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/File:Hobo.jpg)

Schuldiner regrets dropping out of school.

Although Schuldiner apparently did do well in school, it bored him and he eventually dropped out. He did regret this later, however.
Schuldiner was not afraid to take on controversial lyrical subjects such as the anti-drug sentiments of "Living Monstrosity" and the pro-choice (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Murder) angle of "Killing the Babies".

[edit (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/index.php?title=Chuck_Schuldiner&action=edit&section=3)] Musical career
Schuldiner formed Death (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Death) as Mantas in 1983. Original members were Schuldiner (guitar), Rick Roll (not to be confused with Rick Astley (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Rick_Astley)) and Kam Lee (drums and vocals).

In January 1986 Schuldiner moved to Toronto and temporarily joined the Canadian (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Canadian) band Slaughter (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Holocaust) on guitar. However, he quickly returned to continue the formation of Death.

There were several lineup changes, however with Chris Redfield he eventually released his first Death album, titled Scream Bloody Gore (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Al_Gore), in 1987. He continued with 1988's Leprosy with the line-up of former Mantas guitarist Rick Roll and rhythm section Terry Butler on bass and Bill Andrews on drums, and 1990s Spiritual Healing (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Hinduism), where guitarist James "Eddie" Murphy (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Eddie_Murphy) had replaced the fired Roll (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/index.php?title=Msg&action=edit&redlink=1).

After Spiritual..., Schuldiner stopped working with full band members and now worked only with studio and live venue musicians after bad relationships with Death's previous rhythm section and guitarists. This earned Schuldiner something of a 'perfectionist (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/George_Lucas)' reputation in the metal community. Schuldiner had also fired his manager Eric Grief but re-hired him before the recording of his next, influential release.

Death's breakthrough album, Human (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Ape) saw the band evolving (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Evolution) to a more technical and progressive style, in which Schuldiner displayed his guitar skills more than ever. He continued in this style (and continued the success of the band) with 1993s Individual Thought Patterns (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Wrong), 1995s Symbolic (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Narnia), and finally The Sound of Perseverance (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Fart) in 1998.

Schuldiner played guitar in the project Voodoocult (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Satanism) on the album Jesus Killing Machine in 1994.

Schuldiner was also asked to be one of the many guest vocalists on David (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/David) Gruel's 2001 Robot (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Robot) project by Gruel himself. Gruel even campaigned to raise funds to help Schuldiner pay medical bills for the brain cancer that would eventually take his life. Schuldiner succumbed (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Music) to the disease before any collaboration could happen. Gruel, in tears, in an interview over Schuldiner's death, said that "Chuck died for making the right decisions in life. That's just... that's just not fair. (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Angst)" Dave Grohl then leapt into an Olympic sized swimming pool full of crisp 100 dollar bills and gold coins while stating "Boy, does it sure feel great to not have brain cancer".

Time is a thing we must accept.
The unexpected I sometimes
fear.
Just when I feel there's no
excuse for what happens,
things fall into place.
I know there is no way to
avoid the pain that we must
go through, to find the other
half that is true.
Destiny is what we all seek.
Destiny was waiting for you
and me.

I believe behind confusion,
awaits the truth for us.
Past the obstacles we face.
I value our life and trust.
Years of questioning why
things happen the way they
do in life.
Wishing that I could turn back
time, so we could join our
souls.

Summer:
The first official recording emerges in the underground: the rehearsal tape "Death By Metal", which is recorded in the garage of Chuck's mom on Rick's Panasonic tape recorder. Chuck is 17.

Mantas splits up briefly. Chuck plans a new band, simply called DEATH. After a couple of weeks of searching, Chuck finds he must resort once again to working with Rick Rozz and Kam Lee. Death By Metal is given a new tape cover when the band name changes.

Fall/Winter:
In October the 5 track "Reign Of Terror" demo is recorded in Florida. December 30-show with Nasty Savage in Ruby's Pub/Tampa. The show is taped by John & Mark from Guillotine Magazine. Later this is sold as the only official Death live recording through Guillotine and by the band.

Spring:
In January Chuck moves to Toronto/Canada to join Slaughter. He recorded the tune "**** of Death", and returns to Florida after a few weeks. Soon after he returned to San Francisco to hook up with Chris Reifert. Steve DiGiorgio fills in on bass during Death practices while Sadus and Death share rehearsal space. Steve only plays on some unofficial rehearsal tapes. The Mutilation demo leads to the deal with Combat.
Summer:
The recordings of the first album are not going well. The actual recording is made in the Music Grinder in Hollywood by Randy Burns. After the recordings John Hand is welcomed as second guitarplayer. He's not able to keep up with the fast and technical parts of the newer Death material, and never so much as plays one gig with Death or a single note on an album, before he's excused from the band.

1990
The band tours Europe with Gangreen and starts recording Spiritual Healing with Scott Burns.

Before the album is released in 1990 Rick Rozz already is replaced by James Murphy (former Agent Steel and Hallows Eve). More touring takes place. Touring guitarist Albert Gonzales (ex-Evil Dead) replaces James Murphy. Albert is replaced by Paul Masvidal (Cynic).

The other members of Death decide to tour Europe, against Chuck's wishes. The line-up for that tour is Terry Buttler / bass, Bill Andrews / drums, Walter Trachsler / guitar (ex-Rotting Corpse and Death guitar tech/soundman), Louie Carrisalez/vocals (Devestation). Obviously this causes a hug rift between Chuck and his former band members.

Chuck is determined to rise again with Death, his band, despite the fact that the press has printed many rumors and outright lies circulated by his ex-bandmates. Some said he was starting a glam band, others claimed he was in an insane asylum.Chuck Schuldiner-guitar/vocals

SMALLTALK!!!:

Please, tell us something about your band (history, members, recordings/ releases, livegigs, label? etc.).
Kalopsia formed in 1999, originally as a side project to Eschaton. Eschaton was a melodic death metal act and I wanted to have a project that featured brutal slams and barbaric song structures. After Eschaton broke up, Kalopsia became my main focus. We had several line up changes, as many bands do, and played only a couple shows. In the summer of 2002 we began to prepare to record a full length, as we had 11 songs completed. Around this time, there were further line up changes. By the time we were scheduled to record in October 2002, it was only myself and a drummer. We went to Victor studios in Montreal, Quebec Canada, and recorded our debut album, "Exquisite Beauty of the Defiled" with masterful production work by Jean Francois Dagenais, the legendary guitarist of Kataklysm and producer of some of the scene's best bands including Malevolent Creation, Misery Index, and of course, Kataklysm. Shortly thereafter, the drummer left the band. We now have a new guitarist and bassist, and are currently seeking a drummer. There are a few promotional copies of the album floating around, but it hasn't been officially released yet, but the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

How would you describe your position in the wide-world metal scene? What do you think about the underground movement?
Kalopsia stands for quality songwriting. Some people would catagorize us as gore metal, or death metal, and they wouldn't be wrong. For me though, we just want to put out the best quality material possible and not subject ourselves to labels or limits. Sonically, people compare us to Dying Fetus, Death, Malevolent Creation, Kataklysm, Impaled and even Opeth, and I am more than happy to be compared to such legendary bands. I think it is incredible. We are a metal band, and we are proud to be part of the global metal scene. No mainstream genre of music has the support and fan mechanisms of the underground metal movement. It is one of the longest running fanbases in the current music scene and it just proves that people who love metal really live for it like I do!

Which 3 CDs would you take with you to a lonely island?
That's too hard a question. If I had to pick, I would say DEATH "Symbolic," MEGADETH "Rust in Peace" and NAPALM DEATH "Noise for Music's Sake" because it's basically a "best of..." But somebody better get me off that island soon so I can listen to LIVIDITY, DYING FETUS, DARK TRANQUILLITY and ABORTED.

If you had enough money to shoot a video, how would the clip look like?
We are actually looking into doing a video for the song "Tool Shed Therapy." I just want it to be gritty and bloody as ****, with a lot of seizure inducing flashing and thrashing. No hi-tech CGI crap, just full on GORE!

If you`ve the chance to change one day of your life. Which will it be and why?
The day I missed Lividity playing in NYC. I hadn't seen them in 3 years and they haven't been back since. But that was also the day I met my girlfriend, so I would only change the part where I got lost in the Bronx and missed the show.

Which song shall be played on your burial?
I would want everyone to feel better, so I would pick something silly, like Weird Al, "Since You've Been Gone." If I had to pick something more serious, it would be probably the title track off of DEATH's "Symbolic" album, or MEGADETH, "In My Darkest Hour".

If you had the chance to kill someone and to bring back one person in the same way, which would it be and why?
I would kill Carson Daly, just because he really needs a knife stuck in him. And I would bring back Chuck Schuldiner. I think we all agree he was taken from us too soon.

What means metal to you?
I live for metal. It has been a huge part of my life for over 10 years now. I have hundreds of cds and my room is plastered with band posters. My dresser is full of band shirts. I don't know where I would be without metal, but I'm willing to guess probably dead or in jail. So I guess you can say metal is one of the most important things in the world to me.

What is your opinion on political lyrics?
Depends. If they're done well, then they're ok. Napalm Death is of course a good example. Misery Index is a good new band that is bringing that to the forefront and making people think about those issues, which is good. Some bands, however, don't know what the **** they're talking about, and they just make metal/grind/punk bands with political leanings look like angry, uninformed children. "Smash the government" isn't a good lyric unless you can back it up with information that justifies the statement.

What can we expect from your band in the future?
Until we get a drummer, I am focusing on writing new material. If we need to hire a drummer to record, I'll do that. Shows are obviously not a possibility until that gets taken care of. We'll probably do another record, then tour. It's up in the air. Of course, if Dave Culross or Richard Christy knocks on my door and we get signed, everything changes. Expect "Exquiste Beauty of the Defiled" to be unleashed upon the underground in the very near future, and check out www.kalopsia.org (http://www.kalopsia.org) to see what's going to happen next.
