Al McReynolds reeled in 78 pounds of fishing history from an Atlantic City jetty some 27 years ago. The International Game Fish Association recognizes the fish as the world’s largest bass ever caught by an angler, although larger ones have been captured in commercial fishing nets. McReynolds received a $250,000 bounty offered by the Abu Garcia tackle company for landing such a beast.
Where is this fish today you ask? Well, the original carcass has long been gone as it was thrown in the garbage due to freezer burn. Replica mounts of the fish have been made and the controversy comes from who actually owns the original.
McReynolds’ son, Tom, of Somers Point, is currently listing a limited edition, IGFA World Record Striped Bass fish mount on Craigs List (http://southjersey.craigslist.org/boa/856245690.html) for $2,500 but Joe Takach of Brigantine believes he owns the closest thing to an original mount.

I don't think that one was sold. I could be wrong. Here is a post from a man on Dec12, 2009 who claims he did the original mount so I think he did not sell it.

"So I now have the mold of the WR. St. Bass facing left. The original molds were made one facing left and one facing right. The Fish that was used to create the new mold is now hanging in the IGFA museum in Florida. I made 2 copies for Al McReynolds and have one for myself. The ownership of the mold belongs to the McReynolds and all sales of future copies go through them. To date no copies have been sold."

Both losers they have more stories than Walt Disney. He couldn't even get the story straight about how he caught the fish. Google it it's a joke.
