The three fishermen were thrown from the boat into the 39-degree waters about 7 p.m. yesterday, said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Crystal Kneen.
At 7 p.m. yesterday, the temperature on land was 21 degrees, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The vessel sank about 25 miles east of Barnegat Light, officials said.
One man, who is not being identified at this time, was found by members of the Coast Guard search and rescue teams. He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt at the time and was floating in a life raft, Kneen said.
He was responsive after being rescued, Kneen said.
Crews were dispatched via an alert issued by an Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacon on the vessel, Kneen said.
The survivor told Coast Guard officials that after being hit by a wave, he was the only one able to get aboard the life raft.
Two fishermen are still missing and the search and recovery is continuing as of 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Kneen said. The Coast Guard learned from the owner of the vessel that the boat is equipped with survival suits, flares and a life raft aboard.
Names of the fishermen are not being released at this time.
The seas were six-feet high at the time of the incident and winds were recorded at 25 knots, Kneen said. On a chart translating knots to miles per hour, 25 knots is equal to 28.8 mph. Visibility is six miles as searchers continue the intensive air and water search and rescue efforts.
