Some tips for registering:

It is important to register using an active email address (even if you create one specifically for this site) you have to go back to this email address to activate this account before you can log in.

1) Click register or join our community

2) You will be directed to a series of questions. Only certain questions are required to proceed to the next step. Some personal questions can be left blank if you choose to do so. You also have options of not receiving e-mail or communication from others. Put in whatever choice you feel comfortable with. You can always modify later.

3) When you are finished an email will be sent to the email address you provided. It must be a valid e-mail address for you to register. You can always create a new e-mail address at many ISPs. This new address can be used just for online communication, and other sites like this. This is one way of protecting the personal e-mail you use every day.

4) Please be aware that sometimes the mail is channeled into your spam folder, so check your spam folder if you haven't received anything. It does take several minutes for it to be sent.

5) Open that email, then click on the link to complete the registration process.

6) Some people have had trouble registering. Please remember to activate your account by going back to your registered email and clicking the activation link.

Important to remember that the user id and password is case sensitive so you need to type it in exactly as you registered.

If you have trouble please contact us.

To work the smilies, people might have to enter their
user cp account.

Smilies -- Go to "Edit options"

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and change "standard" to "Enhanced interface".

Any other questions please feel free to contact us.

Sail group opens waters to disabled

Posted by Charles Zusman (czusman@starledger.com)/The Star-Ledger August 13, 2008 7:03PM

A big part of the pleasure of boating is the nice people you meet. Just ask Chris Stitt and Mike Tierney, who recently made each other's acquaintance, and both came away much richer for the experience.

Stitt, of Mountain Lakes, has been wheelchair-bound since an auto accident and stroke in November, and is working on rehabilitation. Tierney, of Seaside Park, is the skipper of a 32-foot Catalina sailboat and is a volunteer with Sail-Habilitation, a Barnegat Bay program that takes disabled people boating.

The group's Community Boating Day, held Aug. 2 at the Lavallette Yacht Club, saw some 20 skippers take 66 participants for rides on the bay. Stitt and Tierney were among them.
"It was a super great time," said Stitt, 47, a financial analyst who had sailed before but for whom boating now seemed like an impossible dream. "It was wonderful. I am very pumped up. It was very smooth in the bay and it was a great feeling to be skimming across the water."

His enthusiasm was matched by that of Tierney, who has been volunteering his boat for six years.

"Once you do it, you just can't stop," he said, recalling the looks of gratitude from people he has taken out, ranging in age from 8 to 80. "I get more out of it than they do. It couldn't be more rewarding."

Tierney, 62, who is retired and came to sailing late in life, said enthusiasm for the program catches on, and other skippers he has enlisted always return after their first trip.

"Whenever Stephanie calls, I come," said Tierney. Stephanie is Stephanie Argyris, a physician who specializes in rehabilitation and is the program's founder. A sailor herself, she knows the therapeutic effects of being out on the water.

Stitt was touched by the attention given at the yacht club and the Sail-Habilitation "transfer teams." The teams were the volunteers, including therapists, who helped the participants board the boats. For the first time since his stroke, Stitt left his wheelchair behind, and sat on a regular seat in the cockpit.

If there was a disappointment for Stitt, it was that because of conditions on the bay his ride was under power, not sail. He recalled the gusts and squalls in the morning, "but then the weather broke and it was beautiful," he said.

Stitt was out for about an hour and half, not long by most standards, but a cherished time for the participants--and the skippers.

Boats were power and sail and ranged in size. Tierney can take up to six participants at a time, and he particularly appreciates it when family members come along to share the experience. Stitt's wife, Aleene, was along for the ride.

"It was just so warm and so comforting, it was like we knew Mike forever," Aleene said. "Experiences like that keep Chris so motivated to keep going."

No other Community Boating Days are planned for this season, because the logistics are challenging, but the group is looking to next year and help is needed. "We are absolutely looking for volunteers," said Antoinette Rose, vice president of the group. Help is needed with paperwork as well as assistance on the water.
