Yes, the ball is captive.
Only problem is for some reason my wife keeps adding balls to it, so they do not roll easy.

That's neat . I remember growing up we had an old record player. Our cat would try to scratch the record when you turned it on, we had to yell at him to stay away. Here is looks like the cat is kind of sitting on top of the "record", cool idea for a toy.
