I'm looking for a new spinning reel which I plan on using for plugging. I heard a Daiwa is good but on the heavy side. What should I be considering in the $100-300 range?

You need to get a reel that is balanced to the rod you have or long term plugging is going to wear you down quicker.I would stay away from Penn personally I like my Shimano Spheros I have 6 of them and they are fine for me I like the 8000 series because the 6000 series I can dump the spool on a good cast I use them in rivers the 8000 on the ocean.Just my .02 cents
