Can anyone recommend a spinning reel, 11-14 oz, for the surf. 80-120 bucks price range. Reliability in the sand and water is of most importance. Looking for what is the best for those conditions in that range, knowing that VS is the only reel that can consistantly handle being abused in those conditions.

I hear the Shimano Spheros is good. Don't own one though. Just what I hear.

Go with Penn. Fill the casing with grease and you are good to go.

Go with Penn. Fill the casing with grease and you are good to go. That is what I did before I got a Zeebaas.

Yeah the older penn metal bodies can be pretty relaible. I 2nd packing them with light grease.
Also the "VS lite" I think is now selling around $400. I know that may be out of your price range, but wanted to mention that as an option. You cannot dunk or swim with them, though.

Went with the Shimano Spheros 4000FB, under $100.00, have not fished it much, but so far so good.
