Some people got in touch and asked me about this one. There's the Asbury show on Feb 14th. That show is great, out of control with the traffic, and a long standing success.

However, it seems more people need to know about the Berkeley show. Although you may not find all the plug builders you will find at Asbury, you will find quite a few.

The show is always well-attended and offers something for everyone. As I said about the plug builders, not only will you find some of the most popular ones here selling their wood, you will also be able to talk to them in a relaxed atmosphere, and ask them any question you want, as they will be there all day.

In addition to custom wood, there are vendors there who will have some deals on used tackle, plugs, gear, and reels. In today's poor economy where every dollar counts, you can find some great deals at the Berkeley fishing flea market.

The Berkeley club was established in 1966 and is now in its 24th year. They're a great bunch of guys and girls, and I believe they do stuff for kids as well.

If anyone is going or wants to post any reports, feel free to post up here.

Today's show was incredibly successful. Got to meet the Pres of the Berkeley Striper Club and some of the long-time members. They all deserve a few :clapping::clapping::clapping: for their hard work in putting together such a well-run and heavily attended show.

More about this tomorrow as I get a chance to post up some pics and video interviews I did.

Today's show was incredibly successful.

Um that's a slight understatement Dark, I think it was phenomenally successful. ;) :HappyWave:

I went to that one for the first time, thinking it would be like the regular fishing flea markets. What a great surprise, it wasn't. There were at least a dozen plugmakers there. The place was crowded. I got there at the beginning, and felt like it was a bum rush to get concert tickets once they opened the doors. It reminded me of the demand to get into the Asbury show when they open up in the morning. I'm not used to seeing people hyped up to get into a regular fishing flea market.

And the vendors, I got a chance to talk to the plug guys and ask them questions. It's really good to connect the faces to the names. I spent about $100 there, filled the holes in my tackle arsenal. I would say it was one of the best, great show.

I was there when it opened too, in and out in a 1/2 hour. Got some great plugs, and some bucktails and teasers. One of the best shows around besides Asbury, imho.

A little about the Berkeley Striper Club. They're a great bunch of people who do a lot of good for the community. Anyone who wants to learn more about them feel free to check out their site for more info.

http://www.berkeleystriperclub.org/ (http://www.berkeleystriperclub.org/)

Established in 1966, the Berkeley Striper Club is one of the largest and most active surf-fishing clubs in New Jersey. We have 180 members, some of whom are among the best fishermen in New Jersey. Our members have one common thread - the fanatic pursuit of Striped Bass. Whether you fish from the beach, jetty, or a boat, the Berkeley Striper Club is for you.

http://www.berkeleystriperclub.org/images/bsc2_small.jpg
The Berkeley Striper Club's objective is to promote and protect recreational fishing interests, while safeguarding our natural resources.

The Berkeley Striper Club accomplishes this by being active members in the following organizations: Jersey Coast An
gler's Association, Association of Surf-Fishing Clubs, and Friends of Island Beach. In addition, many of our members belong to the N.J. Beach Buggy Association, which promotes mobile beach access for fishermen.

The Berkeley Striper takes pride in giving back to our community. Each spring the club sponsors a Fisherman's Flea Market in which a portion of the proceeds go to several area charities.

Um that's a slight understatement Dark, I think it was phenomenally successful. ;) :HappyWave:

I went to that one for the first time, thinking it would be like the regular fishing flea markets. What a great surprise, it wasn't.

Steve, I don't have the total official attendance numbers for that show, but for the time I was there it did seem to be a great success for the Berkeley Striper Club.

I got to meet with Gary B, club President, who took me around and iintroduced me to some people who were responsible for that show running so smoothly.

One person whose name was mentioned more than once was Nancy P. I'm sure there were lots more behind the scenes. For all the traffic that came through those doors, that flea market was one of the smoothest ones I have been to. I understand that this is their 15th year running that.

I have been hitting the sportsmens shows and flea makets for a long time, and reporting on them for the last 2. In that time you get a general sense of which ones are successful, and the ones that are average. Events like this are subject to many variables. The economy has hurt the spending patterns of some people. Some of the feedback I've been getting is that at the larger shows, there are times when people spend less $$.

However, despite the tough economic times we're living in, that show seemed a rousing success by any measure you took of it.

Attendance:
Gary told me earlier in the day that a good number for that day would be around 1100, similar to last year.

As I said, I don't have the official tally, but with the steady stream of traffic going in and out all day, I might guess that they met or exceeded that number for yesterday's flea market.

You get a feel for the show/flea market by the buzz generated by the people who go there, and the vendors. Sometimes the vendors grumble that people are spending less, that's the way it goes. :don't know why:

However there was not one vendor I spoke with yesterday that had a gripe about the show. They were all happy and said they would book tables again. And, from the people I talked to leaving the show with bags and purchases, they were happy too.

I think even calling it a fishing flea market is a slight misnomer as well. IMO that Berkeley "fishing flea market" has risen to a level above that of the average fishing flea market.

What made it stand out is the number of plugbuilders that were there, and the different attractions like the replica of Al McReynolds' striped bass (Big Bertha), which I missed,
http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=6104&highlight=bertha
and some other things.

I got to meet some of the Sr Berkeley members on the way in and out.

"Guys at the gate", nice meeting ya's. :HappyWave:
10292

This gentleman told me no one ever takes his pic, so I snapped the shot. (Sorry I forgot your name)
He looks like a guy who is one of those "silent sharpies". ;) I'd bet he knows more about fishing than any 10 younger guys put together. And you can meet guys like him, and more, all for the low admission price of joining the Berkeley Striper Club.

10293

They really seemed like a fun bunch. If any younger anglers out there are thinking of joining a club and want to check out a place where some knowledgable and fun anglers hang out, why not go to one of their meetings and see for yourself?

It's all there at the link I listed above.

Congrats to all who made that show a success. :clapping::clapping:

I don't know how you can surpass yourselves next year, but I'm sure you'll try. Special thanks to GaryB and Nancy P for filling in the background details. Nice meeting you all. :HappyWave:

Kevin's Lures, Jackson, NJ

Kevin had an interesting story. This was the first time I ran into him. He started making plugs because he didn't have to money to keep throwing away on plugs that he might eventually lose on the rocks.

He has always been handy with tools, and a tinkerer. So he started making plugs to fill his fishing needs, saw that they worked well, and branched out from there.

Because he's making only a few at a time as a hobby, his prices are attractive, from $7-$15 per plug.

He even sells unfinished plug kits, for a beginner to try, or a Dad to get into plug building with his son. Very reasonable, I think each kit with everything included is around $5

Hey I agree with you but there are plenty of newbs out there willing to shell out big bucks for whatever is the flavor of the moment. Many of them are like sheep. If one year you push brand A, they will buy it. Next year push brand B, and tell them brand A sucks, they will now buy brand B. Just because you told them it's better.

Take the Vision Sand and surf eels. Sure they work but they are overpriced pieces of rubber. I will only buy them if they are used at the flea markets as part of a package deal or if they are discounted and I'm in a good mood. Otherwise they are way overpriced. Still. guys buy them because to use them you don't need any skill, just swim them through the water and you will catch fish. How about using a bucktail where you need a little skill? Nope, no thanks, they would rather blindly buy the visions like sheep and swim them because the "experts" are telling them that's what hot this year.

And look at the stormshads vs the tsunami shads. Most push the storm shads because of the distibution deal with the tackle shops, thats all you heard for the last 5 years, buy storm shads, buy storm shads. And now, when the tsunami shads are out and available, (these are a better than the storms, actually) the tackle shops and seminars will push these. I will bet you the profit margin on the tsunami is now better than the storm shads.

As I said, just sheep blindly following the flock. Learn how to use the basics like bucktails, jig and rubber, and hopkins, and some loaded bombers or mambos, and you will catch more fish even when other guy are out and can't pull one in to save their lives.:learn:

And yes I agree that Berkeley is one of the better shows out there. I might try to hit it up if I get my stuff done by then.

^ Hookset, I can't answer for that for sure, but the talk among the Berkeley members I spoke with today was that they were very happy with that venue....

It's a bigger hall, parking is much more convenient. Beyond that I think the Intermediate School can handle much more traffic.
I think that this was a good year for Berkeley. However, as with other fishing flea markets I think Sandy and its devastation did have some affect on the total attendance and the amounts of money folks are spending.

There were dozens of custom plug builders, some beautiful and colorful tables....
Seems guys were buying and traffic was brisk for most of the morning.

An observation I made, also confirmed by conversations with some of the builders, is that the plugs that were priced closest to $20 seemed to be the most popular with guys looking for custom plugs.....

Over the years some have gone far above this $20 level....Often, the price they are asking is completely reasonable based on the amount of extra time and painting that goes into some of these spectacularly finished plugs....

For example, well-known builder Chumbucket, in the past, was producing only a few plugs at a time. His plugs were regarded as true works of art rather than fish catching instruments. Mostly collectors bought them., or fishermen who were lucky enough to fish with him.....
I know Chumbucket for years now, :HappyWave: have always admired his work, and know first hand the tremendous amount of work he puts into just one of his plugs.....
So I hope folks don't mis-interpret what I am saying here.....(I just randomly picked Chumbucket as one example and hope not to offend anyone who is reading this)

There are new plugs out there that will continue to command up to $45 for the first sale, not even taking into account the e-bay sales, because of he collectors out there....IMO that segment of the market drives the higher end sales, the collectors all over....

**But it appears, that the market for plugs most will actually fish...... is most solid around the $20-25 price range....The custom builders who recognize that and can make money at that price..seem to be doing the most volume...:learn:
Just something I noticed today, and gathered up feedback about, in conversations with a few builders.....

Berkeley has a lot of old-timers as well....
Many decades of solid experience in that club.......

I went around and took pics of whatever caught my interest......As many of the builders had been posted about on previous pages in this thread, each time I try to document something different.....That's how I came up with the following posts.....

Hope ya's enjoy...and to the sitemembers and guys I ran into, some who I haven't seen in years...nice seeing ya's ....see ya again in the Salt....:fishing: :HappyWave:

Gear-Up Surfcasting....now making heavy-duty plug bags.......relative newcomers to the scene...but seemed like a good group, NY/LI fishermen who like to bust up on each other as well...I anticipate some funny Youtube videos from these guys as they figure out their marketing and advertising mix....

16595

Pictured above are Echo, Artie, Adis, and Moe....best of luck to ya's. :HappyWave:

16596

The bags - they say they are bulletproof....with a generous warrantee....

16597

I can't report on the durability of these bags yet as I haven't used one...but the buzz in the surf community is that they are pretty good.
Met all the guys today and was impressed.....I think you will be hearing more about them in the future..:fishing: :HappyWave:

Ron Muccie and son Ron.......
Father and Son, building and finishing plugs, fishing together......

Over the years I have come to think of Ron as one of the old-timers....yet even he has guys who he fondly remembers as teaching him.....going back to acknowledge influence of, or times fishing with, the likes of Billy McFadden, Gary Hull, Tony Spina, and scores of others who are no longer here.....
That's the mark of a good fisherman, always willing to learn, and to teach as well.....

Ron has patiently taught many others to tie teasers, and to ramp up the game a bit to catch more fish.....and believes in giving back that which was given to him...Always a pleasure...Ron will be at the Asbury show next week as well.....:HappyWave:

John Skinner - writer, teacher, and hardcore surf and kayak fisherman....:fishing:

He has....
written outstanding Saltwater books:
1. Season on the Edge
2. Fishing the Bucktail

3. Numerous saltwater articles and a regular saltwater blog....
4. Started a company that has an online fishing log database.....www.FishersLog.com (http://www.FishersLog.com)

He is a tremendous fisherman, prolific writer, and all-around nice guy.
Being a good fisherman is one thing.
Translating that so people can learn from you, is taking it to another level. John Skinner has done that time and time again......:clapping:

Here is just one of the exciting pages from his book Season on the Edge...
It talks about how he first got started, the fun in catching and battling his first bluefish and his love of fishing as a learning process.
Dating from those first fish to a Season travelling and fishing the legendary places all Surfcasters dream of...a must-read for any angler. Whether you are a beginner or have experience, I believe everyone can get something out of his books.

Today I finally got a chance to meet him in person. I feel he is just as portrayed in his videos. Nice demeanor, knowledgable, and very humble.

If you have a chance find a way to read either of his books....you will be a better fisherman because of it.....

Nice to meet ya, John...:HappyWave:

Went to the show this morning, lots of great looking plugs. Seems each year the detail of the painting gets better.
Liked the location big time over the previous years. Lots of people, plenty of room.
Purchased (3) 1 oz Dannys by Jigman and an 08 Digger Darter.
Was a nice way to spend a March morning......need to fish soon....

Surfday is pretty cool but there are mostly new plugs there and a lot of tackle shops. I have been to the other 2 as well. I would say if you are focused on custom plug builders per say that asbury and berkeley have more of them. I don't have a headcount this is just my .02. Any of them will have you drooling so make sure you bring extra cash.

That is kind of cool, will you be wearing a trenchcoat? There was a guy at one of the previous asbury park shows walking near the entrance selling his own plugs. I thought that was smart marketing and it added an air of mistique. Will try to look you up if I go are there any ways to identify you?

He does have a way too serious look on his face tho lol. madcaster I really like that idea. Go to all the shows that cost big bucks for a table like berkekey, asbury, surfday and the NJ Saltwater fishing expo in April. Wear a distinctive trenchcoat, Maybe black. Tie a bunch of needles and your different plugs on the inside with re-usable zip ties. And walk around and sell them. Definitely a great marketing idea. I even thought of a clever name for you -Madcaster the trenchcoat needlefish King!:HappyWave:

Talked with John (makes the Bernzy plugs) completed a trade with him, I really like his plugs.

It was another good one.

I got there with a few things to do.....gave a milk crate filled with stuff to Berkeley for their fund-raising table...

Veered from my original plan when I ran into a friend and site-member I haven't seen in a long while.....we spent the rest of the time walking around.

I tried to introduce him to some of the older and newer people in the fishing world.......we shared a lot of stories with some of the old timers....for me that's what makes each show like this special.....talking about the way things used to be.....

and lamenting that so few who complain today really seem to remember how great fishing used to be.....because many of them weren't fishing 20-30 years ago.....The lack of initiative of many to do anything about fisheries management except rant on the internet.....most will not even take the time to attend meetings or write a simple letter or e-mail...........

DarkSkies
03-02-2015, 09:58 AM
In no particular order, and with no agenda in mind, we wandered around the tables.......ran into California Tommy Lynch.....Chumbucket.....the SR Berkeley Members.....always willing to share stories........Madcaster and his family.....

I was so glad to see him in this better state of health....every year we lose too many old timers......I hope and pray Ron's health and good condition will continue.....he's one of the Old Salts that is part of our history......:HappyWave:

I didn't take many pics this year......got out of the high gear and decided to take it easy for a bit....the conversations were well worth it....Always a good time at the Berkeley Show.....

Thanks to All the folks at Berkeley who made it run better through the hard work behind the scenes....from the folks who collected the money, and helped with the setup and cleanup, Steve (Nitestrikes) who's always at the fisheries meetings.......to the Family members who cooked, baked, and put some great food out there.....it's a team effort......and it shows in the Goodwill buzz that show generates, before and after....:clapping:

I did mention Matt/Chumbucket......one of the most talented builders out there.....and not in the middle of the hype that you see elsewhere.....who also happens to fish every spare chance he gets..........

I really don't want to get involved in any comments about ANY builders.....I have relationships with most of them....and respect the hard work they put into building so mooks like us can fish nice plugs......

However, most of the plugs I fish are no-name brands, picked up at the flea markets for $4 or less..........or given to me by friends........
