Depends if it's live or dead and do I want it to swim deep or shallow

I prefer a sharpened coat-hanger as I roast them with marshmallows over the BBQ pit. Tasty.

A guy who thinks before he answers.
Most guys don't have to bother with that, snag and drop with a weighted treble is the golden road to becoming tackle shop heroe's. Dark are you trolling for dollars here?

My personal choice for placing the hook is on top of the bunker, just behind the head in front of the dorsal fin. The meat is firm there, and the hook can pull free of the bait when it's time to set the hook. Do not place the hook more than an 1/8 inch deep. This method makes a bunker or herring swim high. To get a live bait to swim deep hook the bait near the anus in front of the anal fin. Mostly used from a boat or in an inlet or canal where deeper water is encountered. Hooking chunk baits I prefer the head hooked though the lips to keep bait from spinning. When drifting or slow trolling a dead whole bunker we place a 2 ounce bank sinker in the mouth which is held shut with a small wire tie, the hook placed through the nostrils.

Wow most guys just snag and drop. Why should they be bothered with actually learning something.
Thanks for the tips finchaser.

Make sure there are no scales lodged on the hook point.
