Hey guys I just stopped by G's house, he told me he created an album with his pics.
I'll post a link to the pics he shot the other day.
http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/album.php?u=195

I thought we were gonna keep everything in the Urban fishing thread.

Maybe it's a better idea to roll with it this way, for the real time reports and the pics here in this thread...

and all GENERAL articles and videos to remain in the urban fishing thread.
http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=5412

Anyone else that wants to get in on this thread, with pics or videos that THEY took, feel free to post up.

Guidelines for posting in this thread:

1. I think we also want to state from the start that general pics are best. Specific pics are OK if there are no fish in the pics. Once we start bringing in the large, I would encourage people to disguise the background.

2. Or...take the shot of the fish when you get back home.

3. If you're releasing it, try to focus on the water and not the specific background.

4. I will be giving out plugs and prizes for guys releasing the largest fish this year. :fishing:  :plastered: :clapping::clapping: :wheeeee: :thumbsup:
5. If I feel it's too specific I might have to delete the pic, OR the album. so please think of that when you take that shot of that fish.

We fish a lot of spots that can only hold 5-10 people at a time.
Some of the people there are old school anglers, they hate the internet.

I don't want to do anything to ruin it for those guys.
I believe if we remain within those parameters, we can have some fun here.

So feel free to roll with the Dirty Water Anglers, if ya can stand the stink of the mud and the chemicals. ;)

Just in case anyone doubts what can happen with the internet and reports that are too specific, here's an example when a guy last year put out a report that he caught 20 bass at a specific area. :(

What? you expect people to actually put time in to catch a fish?:beatin:It's so much easier to run after the reports when everyone else is catching. I fished for 5 hours last night for one small fish. Hey at least I got one. You can't catch a fish from a computer screen.:fishing: But I guess you can catch a fish when your buddy calls you from a cell phone. You are absolutely right on this finchaser. For now I will enjoy my small fish and the cold weather until all the internet fishermen decide it's time to come out and fish.

This is a place where you can see G's pics and the pics we will be posting up as part of the Dirty Water Anglers Group.

If any of ya's got the stones to fish those muddy, deep, dark, and stanky waters where we fish at, or if ya just wanna see who's crazy enough to fish those waters and pull large bass to 48" out of that slop, then stop on by to see what G's group is about! :fishing: :HappyWave:

I think the Passaic is a beautiful river, gjb, other than when it floods.:( There are some stretches that are so isolated you hardly ever see a boat, and some places right under peoples noses that never get any fishing pressure.

Love the Mr Hanky reference. :clapping::clapping::laugh:
Bababooey, we never see too many chunks. Most of the time it's little pieces, like G said. Ya can't tell if it's brown pieces of bulkhead or something else...

Also, ya never know if that bass you catch in the back of LI Sound or the front of Point Pleasant wasn't nose deep in crap and toxic muck 2 weeks before at the foot of a big river somewhere. ;)

Hooked up with G tonight and fished a Dirty Water spot.
The wind was blowing from the NE. The water was a little cloudy, but not chocolate milk like some of the bays. The water was relatively warm compared to the bays and got up to around 50.

There's only one bait they use there right now. If ya don't bring a pitchfork with ya you might as well go home. ;)

Throughout the day some small fish were caught, maybe a dozen or more, no keepers today.
Here's a 26" fish caught and quickly returned.
10662

We fished the whole flood tide until slack. A few missed hits was all that was in the cards for us.

Some spearing have started to filter in, but not in great concentrations. I got a little bored and started to fish spearing profile plugs. Also fished lightweight spearing profiile rubber jigs, nothing. We still had a good time.

I feel with the small bass and an occasional keeper, it can get better with the bunker coming in.

Happy Easter to all! :HappyWave:

Hit Nomoco at sunset yesterday to find a fish on artificials. Water was clean, clear, and very cold in the ocean, 50's. Beautiful conditions for the sunset bite, but no bait to be found. Pluggers, boaters. and bait fishermen alike got blanked at this popular location. Stopped by and saw Speedy, :HappyWave: and went to the bunker factory to make bait.

Bumped into Joesfishinproblem there, the bunker were not in close reach, so I cut out of there with the bunker I had left over.

Before I left I saw these 2 guys with spinning reels get some hits from decent fish. Unfortunately one of them didn't have his rod secured in a sand spike. He ran to grab it as it had a massive hit, he was microseconds late as the rod went flying into the water...

I felt bad for the guy, losing a nice bass or big bluefish, and his setup. I watched it all in slow motion and yelled at him to grab it up, but it just went flyyyyyying awaaaaaaay... ;) :(

There are some big fish out there people. Murphy's law says you'll get that massive strike when yer not paying attention, or taking a leak, so pay attention! :learn:

Decided to hit the Dirty Water areas and do some inside scouting. First stop, guys were hitting small bluefish on bunker, though they did get a 35" bluefish the day before and some 30" bass. Nice to meet ya's. :HappyWave:

Then I found G in another place. There had been some action, it was maybe a little slower than it had been. All bass though, no bluefish.

Big Rodney had the hot hand, :clapping: he nailed a 32" and 38" bass near the top of the tide, tide change. There were bunker here and there.

11009

The 38" bass had a huge gut and dwarfed the 32".
Probably around 22.
11010

It was late and G had been out for hours and wasn't feelin well. I took him home, back out in the rain.

I found a sheltered place to fish from. I felt that the rain would minimize and the fish would turn on. I was wrong :beatin:as I fished from 2-6am. Nothing in the rain except cold wind that blew through your bones. Ended up sitting in the car with the heater on for 1/2 hour. At 4am the rain minimized again, back out to fish. :fishing:

At 5:30 am, along comes Manny, a guy I met 2 years ago. I helped him land and gaff a monster bluefish from some rocks when no one else was around. He's been fishin that area 25 years. He was happy to see me. We shared some intel and kept fishin for the tide change.

I usually bring my own food, but this guy had Spanish empanadas (meat pastries) and rolls with butter. After being in the cold for so long, I was happy he offered to share. Muy delicioso! :dribble::thumbsup:

Lesson: Sometimes it pays to help strangers out. http://stripersandanglers.com/Forum/images/icons/icon3.gif

At 6am, around the tide change, I got a nice runoff on my bunker head, didn't come tight. That was it. As the tide for that location is pretty strong, I decided to cut my losses and go to work on time.

A friend of his called in a 30" bass from a nearby location, but Manny got blanked too. I had a feeling it would be a little slower today.

The fish are there if you have the patience to sit and wait. The key is the bunker loading up, and the water there is warmer than the ocean or bays. Hopefully some more decent fish to come out of there. Hope to see G get a nice one, he's definitely put his time in.

you just gave away my secret of how to get a hit when they aren't biting

Works like a charm for me too. ;) Theoretically, the older ya get the more times ya need to take a leak, which statistically translates to more hits!

Marlin is also known as the surf king.

Said he got it on a bunker tail. :wow:

I don't use tails and never considered them as bait. I would much rather use a head. What this catch does is illustrate the concept "to each his own".

Remember that the next time you see a guy fishin a bunker tail and think it's a joke, it worked for this guy.

I have been in G's presence and have spent some time with him to feel comfortable to break his chops a little. My question is this. Is the dirty water anglers forum about pictures of scenery or about catchin fish. Come on homie, where are the pics of the bigguns in the back. I have been dying to see some actual action from our neck of the woods. What's up. I was born and raised in Elizabeth and never knew about bass fishing these parts and I guess I never will. Come on with the secrets and pics of the pigs in the dirty water.

Sadly, this is a slow year.

Here are some figures to give you an idea. They're off the top of my head, may not be completely accurate, but just to give you an idea....
When I first met G in 2008, there was a guy we know who pulled in over 100 bass, 28 to 49 1/2" for the season. Then in 2009, he got 76, to 50".

I don't think he'll come close to that for this year's numbers. Some of the ASMFC figures say that 4 million bass a year pass through those waters, bays, and harbor areas. You could always count on at least 1 nice bass if you went down there and hung out for a night of bunker chunkin.

Now, it's hit and miss. :don't know why:

The warmer water this year may have affected the fishing. There are some places north of us where the water is 10-15 degrees cooler, and the bass are concentrated around. The thing that puzzles me is there have always been resident bass, and this year has been slim pickins for the resident bass in that area. This could also be an early indication that there are less bass around, like some captains and veteran anglers have been saying. :learn:

Hopefully the fall will produce better conditions, and the bass and gorilla bluefish will be back there again. Usually, fish to 35# stop by on the way down south to feed on the bunker. A lot of Dirty Water Anglers are counting on that. I hope they get their wishes. :fishing:

Up the raritan river as high up as Edison there were catches of big bass for 3 years up to 2 years ago. I haven't heard from any of my buddies yet about any catches back there either. It used to be a great back water spot, but this year from what i experienced the fish stayed out front and areas of the bay I fished. I think the water temps that are best for bassin came and left way to quickly. Thats my take on it.

Fished a dirty water spot early AM yesterday.

11964

A friend was out kayaking at dawn and hitting fish. I went to look for him at 7, and the flat water got crazy real quick.

I don't know how he did it, I was 1/2 mile W of him. The intense N/NE wind made it impossible to cover even that small distance, so I went straight out to the channel.

Waves averaging 1'-2', with an occasional 3' thrown in. The only way I could fish was to point the kayak into the oncoming rollers and take them head on. The wind and swell was pretty intense out there after sunrise, it was like someone put a high powered fan on that wouldn't let up. http://www.noreast.com/discussion/images/post_icons/surprise2.gif

I was fortunate to be using the Hobie today, he was out there with just a paddle.

I later found out he came in soon after the heavy rollers started. Good for him, it was a little hairy. :scared: It's pretty impressive the guy was out there with only a paddle, banged some fish, and made it back in one piece. Frikkin maniac, he is.

I managed a few porgies on sandworms before it became too intense and I gradually made my way closer to shore.

11966

I was sad to leave because the fish were there in the channel. :(

Safety first.

It wasn't bad when I set out, and then all of a sudden it was like a fan switch was turned on. I checked the weather ahead of time, they said scattered showers, heavy at times, trending to a N/NW wind pattern. They said nothing about straight E/NE at 20+mph.

Here's a pic I took when I was first paddling out, it really wasn't that bad till the wind kicked up. I didn't break out the camera afterward because I was concentrating on the swells and duration. :scared:

Fished the dirty water again....

but the current was ripping in the channel and with the Fri night boat traffic it wasn't safe to hang there for too long. So I had to improvise, and managed a few sea bass, some dogfish, and a 15" weakie. Beautiful fish, pic and release.

I went there looking for weaks and big bluefish, which were in the channel. I had trouble in the channel when I first went out there. The current was ripping which made it hard to present. I had to re-think my plan. I drifted somewhere else where I found mussel beds, and got the weakie. The unusual thing was that no porgies were around where I was that night, only seabass and dogfish.

I think in some places the porgies are moving out into deeper water. What's left is the little ones. If ya want pork chops, fish deep structure.

12000

Weakfish, I haven't seen one of these in awhile. Quick C&R. All fish have been caught on sandworms, tandem porgy rig.

Hey Jigfreak, the Dirty Water fishin has left a lot to be desired this year. In past years G had fish up to 48", and some of the regulars got as much as 75 nice bass over 15# and up to 40# per season.
This year hasn't shaped up at all like the past years when it comes to larger fish in the dirty water rivers and bay areas.

It's all good, just a little disappointing for us when we're trying to show people that there are big bass sometimes living within a few miles of their front door. :HappyWave:

DarkSkies
09-10-2010, 10:05 PM
Met up with a friend for some Dirty Water kayak fishin this morning. He had been into some teen bluefish and bass a few days ago when the mullet and peanuts got trapped and were hammered by some nicer fish. I specifically went over there looking for some angry gator bluefish. On that challenge, it didn't happen as the sick amounts of bait 4 days ago had thinned out.

12030

However it was still an OK trip. I managed 4 small bass to 22" on the T&W. This was the first time we used the T&W at that spot this fall, and the first time for me at that location. He managed a few bass, one 8# bluefish at the end of the trip by drifting a snagged peanut, and a few fish that came unbuttoned as he drifted some porgies he got on sandworms, for bigger fish.

I didn't get my first fish until 7am.

12031

In the next half hour, I managed a total of 4 bass on the flood, 2 of them being a double-header that hit within 5 secs of each other. :dribble: :headbang:That was the most exciting part, the rest of the morning was spent maneuvering around in the wind.

Double header
12032

We each lost a few other fish on the T&W. I think the murky water may have had something to do with that. Visibility was at most 1-2'. The visibility of the water I usually fish T&W at is at least 6-8'

The wind was a steady 20mph, with sustained gusts of 25mph.
The wind made it a little tough for us as it was wind against tide for most of the morning. That can sometimes be to your advantage, I'll explain in the T&W thread in the kayak forums.

12033

In all, I had fun fishin a new (to me) spot. A sincere debt of gratitude to my friend for giving me background about the place and the layout. He saved me a lot of scouting and guesswork, and he's a maniac fisherman to boot. I had a great time and learned a new place. :HappyWave:

hey fellas good luck this year out there and be safe it these treacherous dirty waters!

anyways, i finally got out to do some night hunting, err fishing and headed down to my local river. Water was too warm in the 1st spot i tried(66*) so we made the move to the main river after 30mins or so.

We were surrounded by a massive school of silversides. it was crazy how flat the water was but when u moved they freaked out and made the water boil.

after about an hr with no hits, no signs of predators, I was just about to call it a night half way thru the incoming. thats when an angry 27.5" decided to come up to the surface out of the shadow line and scare the sh*t outta me. I love when that happens. big splash and rip, drag going, it felt good after a loong summer.
last year I caught my 1st keeper of the fall on sept 13th. i bet if i pinched his tail i would be able to call him this years 1st keeper, but hey I dont need any bad karma. of course nothing after that for the next hr... hope its a good season this year.:fishing::dribble:

When we were out fishin last night, G reported the Dirty Water places are starting to produce a little more, though nothing is consistent yet....

2 weeks ago a 45" bass was caught

About 1 week ago a 51" bass was caught.

These are still "needle in a haystack" fish. Lucky fish or whatever you want to call them, all caught on bunker. Most of the guys fishing the dirty water are catching short bass and small to medium bluefish. But every once in a while a nicer one is landed. The arrival of a regular stream of bunker in the water will help kick things up a bit. :fishing:

G, let me be the first to congratulate ya on your first keeper this year. I know you got dozens of shorts, always waiting for the bigger fish. They just weren't here in any numbers in the Dirty Water this year like they were in the past.

But still, you kept at it, caught countless small bass and blues, and some big blues in the Spring, and now finally a decent fish. :clapping::clapping::clapping:

Wtg, dude, proud of ya for having the patience to see it through in the Dirty Water!!!!!!:thumbsup: :plastered: :wow: :lookhappy: :fishing:

G had been after me to hit up the "fantastic" Dirty Water fishin with a kayak, so I did that this morning. I was thinking of fishing the beach, but couldn't get an accurate feel on what I thought the winds might be, so I made the short trip to that stank water that G loves. :HappyWave:

The winds were building when I launched. I fished the last hour of the flood, the slack, and 4 hours of the ebb. I had a hit on the T&W within 3 minutes of putting it out, then nothing for the next hour. I was trying to figure out how better to present, as it seems the fish were having trouble finding the tube. Tried bigger pieces of worm, slower trolling speeds, and the best I could get was taps, no hookups. It soon became apparent there were a lot of small fish around and that any fish there were scattered.
(Later I found out there are still spot and kingfish back there and a few other places)

I fished a bridge I had wanted to fish for a long time, back and forth, back and forth, around the structure. The wind VS tide made the drift a bit difficult. I worked heavy shads, bucktails, and drifted worms to try to coax anything out of that.

Finally managed a small bluefish about 8" on a worm, woo hoo!
At least it saved me from the skunk. When you have to rely on a small bluefish to save your outing, things must be dismal, and they were. :plastered:

Not ready to give up, I drifted around a rockpile out in the middle, 5x, not a tap on worms. Then went to the other shoreline, back to the T&W.

Finally managed a bass on one of the tubes. I probably shouldn't count it as it was not while trolling. I got it while the tube was sitting on the bottom as I was rebaiting the other tube. It was the smallest bass I've ever caught in my life, about the size of the bluefish.

Still not ready to give up, I entered a semi-restricted area, and tried some old skool NY Harbor bucktail tricks I used to do. Not one bass from that either. Drifted some channels in current for about a mile with peanut bunker, bunker chunk, and worms, nothing.

Giving it one more try, went to the opposite shoreline, and trolled about a mile of that across rocky areas, hoping for a Hail Mary bass that I could actually take a pic of. Alas it wasn't meant to be today. :don't know why:

Let's call them Dirty Water Satan's Dingleberries.

They say being in a kayak gives you some advantages. The only advantage I had today was getting to fish all that dead water and learning it isn't quite ready yet. About 2-4 weeks more is when I'm guessing it will turn on at that location. Last year they got some 25# there at the end of Oct.

I have to give a shout out to the guys who will sit at a pier or dock for 6-12 hours at a time, like G, to get a bigger bass.

Also had the pleasure of meeting MASardinas, his wife Pinky, and their son. Nice to meet ya's, good talks about your love for fishin! :HappyWave:

Meat works best back there because of the murkiness and deep shorelines in certain areas. Beyond that, it seems to me you need higher concentrations of bait to bring fish together in groups in the fall. There's so many crabs and mantis shrimp there to begin with, they can always grab a quick bite and aren't necessarily in aggressive feeding mode most of the time.

In the Spring, it's a different story as they follow the bunker.

After that I made a move to another area where some boats launch from. Talked to a few guys who traveled a lot of miles today and got completely blanked. One guy went 5 miles one-way to catch one keeper porgie. It was tough for a lot of folks today. Also compared notes with a pretty knowledgable fisherman I met on the way home.

Ya can't blame the temp, as the water temps in the deep water harbors are colder than most of the bays. We both agreed that the best fishin back there won't be for another few weeks yet as bass and blues build up in numbers on the Fall migration.

I sure hope so. I covered about 6 miles total in my kayaking travels today, with not much to show for it.
It was a humbling experience. :o

Hope ya catch em up tonight, G.
You got way more patience than me. :kooky: :fishing:

I didn't have a problem with any of it and I don't hate people who fish bait. To me it's boring to just sit around waiting for a fish to swim by kind of a no brainier. I prefer to entice fish into smashing a lure to me it's much it more challenging and exciting.

Yes I do use bait for bottom fishing on a boat if the fish can't be jigged examples: blackfish or night fishing blues, sharking chunking tuna. I do use live bait for bass because I get to control the bait and it adds to the excitement . I also don't believe in snag and drop as it is another no brainer and injures or kills too many fish.. Plus I release all my fish.

Your right about one thing most of us won't wear our $200 waders back there;)

This was the big one that didn't get away.
North Bergen resident Jude Foley caught an Atlantic striped bass near the George Washington Bridge on Sunday that weighed 50 pounds, 7 ounces.
"We're going to eat it, that's prime meat right there," said Foley, 42, of 61st Street, eyeing the 4-foot, 4-inch monster fish.
Fishing in the Hudson River for 15 years, Foley said he's never caught a fish that size before.
It took Foley and his friend, Robert Vitale, 52, of Waldwick, about 90 minutes to get the fish onto the boat. Vitale, who owns the boat, finally grabbed the fish under the gills and hauled it in.
The world record catch for the same fish is 78 pounds, 8 ounces, and that fish was caught in Atlantic City in 1982, according to the International Gaming Fish Association.
Foley used a small bunker fish to lure the bass but said the fishing line was not strong enough to haul in his catch.
They tried to employ a net but it broke apart.
"You don't want to muscle him (the fish) and snap the line," Vitale explained.

^^ Beautiful fish, some quality fish are migrating into that river now. Like submarines, they silently cruise the bottom half of the water column. Most people have no idea fish that size are there almost year round. As long is the food is abundant, they stay for awhile... The problem is they are hard to catch because of this tendency to be in the lower half of the water, and the probability that most large fish travel solo, unless they're feeding on large bunker schools.

Here's a DW fish I was sent a pic of yesterday, right after the guys got it. They snagged bunker. Because it was rocky, they put the bunker out on a balloon, and got this fish. I tried that in a similar area last year, and was not successful. I still believe in that method, and these guys proved it works. :clapping::clapping:

I wonder if it will affect the fishing in that area?

BAYONNE (http://www.nj.com/bayonne) — The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced its preferred alternative to the Bayonne Bridge clearance issue is to raise the bridge's roadway to 215 feet.

The "Raise the Roadway" plan is the most cost effective and least disruptive option, officials said today. The Port Authority Board of Commissioners committed in June to announcing a preferred alternative by the end of the year.
In September, the board authorized spending up to $1 billion to make sure the bridge does not impede future traffic at the Newark and Elizabeth container port complex. An alternative under consideration, tearing down and reconstructing the bridge, was estimated to cost upwards of $2 billion.

The raising will involve reconstruction of the existing approaches, ramps and main span to a higher elevation, allowing larger ships to pass under the raised bridge and access the Port of New York and New Jersey when the Panama Canal is expanded in 2014.

Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward said, "This is an important next step to developing a cost-effective solution to address the Bayonne Bridge navigational issues."
The recommended bridge solution is designed to fix the bridge clearance issue, which will pose a navigational problem for larger ships trying to access the Port of New York and New Jersey after the Panama Canal expands in 2014.

I guess those shrimp feed everything back there. Good job on the report. When to you start to catch bigger stripers and blues in the dirty water. Any weakfish?

well i have not done much fishing in a while so i hit some of my go to spots and it hsa not gone well its just as i left it me skunking or nothing but small fish last week end perth small blues went one for five spots two that were just the size i would keep micro fluke now i stayed close to home went to bayonne i still suck swing and swing micro spot this timeand that is just sad no bass at all not evan the little ones noe i set up the big rod nice two lb blue i feel good now so any way i got one more blue two lb class and then all i could do is swing and mis this year i just think i want the fishing to be over till next year so i can have a fresh start i just cant get a break after fishing i got stuck waiting for the path the signals go down and only one track open and on top of that all the trains were delayed another 15 mins got the square power went down on train for 3 or 4 min so after all that i walked home allmost 2 miles:burn:i think next time i will just stay home:banghead2::soapbox:

well here a late report i went out sat morn to a spot with the bad and i was so pumped for some reason i was not going to quit rain or no rain so i get set up it was slow just a few small hits but i was not going home thats what was the plan so i kept at it now i was talking to a guy and he told me a blow fish was pulled up but the guy was gone so i did not see it so we keep fishing bunker show no fish on them for a while then the small blues show up at least we got fish and the water is not that dirty any more a guy pulled up a pin fish he was mixed in with the spot

You beat the skunk...congrats G...

I really feel that area is within 3 weeks of blowing up as the water cools. There are already big blues staging in the Western Sound....
from Execution Light to the Bronx and near the bridges, blues 10-16lbs. Caught mostly at night, those blues in that area should make a path directly down the E River and into the NY Bight....some reports say they're already there, though I think that action is still spotty....

They should be there soon, following the bunker...with some bass right behind them....
That area is loaded with sea bass, spot, and pinfish as well, more so than it has been in the last few years....
Hope you're there when the fish come down the pike....

You deserve something other than buzzard's luck....I believe it's gonna turn around real soon..... :HappyWave:
