on sunday April 4th,2010 at 3:23-am,I made a cast with my long,light
stick[St.Croix] mated to a shimano Catala-301-a.
attached was a 3/4 oz smiling bill tipped with an 8 inch white
curlytail.
I casted for about 40 minutes and then,,,BAYUM!,,I was into a fat
schoolie!

20 minutes later,I hit another fat schoolie,good fighter too!
then at almst 4-am,I slammed into a fat bass again!,,,this one took some
drag[15 mono].
I fought with it and had to do some dancing to land it because of where
I was fishing.
still,I land it and it was 26 inches.

so,I guess I broke the ice early!
yeah baby!
forgot the cam,saw the water temp is 48 so,I went,I casted,I caught!
also,I heard 2 fish smack on top somewhere far out.

Ripplugger thanks for getting out early in the cold water. That inspired me to start using bucktails more. I have been out a few times in the last 2 weeks. 2 times I got fish, 2 times I didn't . I'm fishing in a river near me. The bucktail and curly jig is a great combo, it really works well Rip. I also used a schoolbus bomber to get one bass around 25", but the bucktails definitely work better. The only problem is I lose 1 every time I go, time to stock up.

Here's his report:


got OTW about 4:20am.
wrong tide for my usual fishing style so,I tried a spot I know of fished
by an old friend,"No *** Eddie".
this place is a bridge and about 300 yards north there is another RR
bridge thats old.
there is strong current down the center of the river with slacker water
on both sides.
This guy Eddy fishes a ballon/eel in this spot a lot or with a fresh
bunker fillet.
I told myself that I can use my D method to fish some rubber in that
spot the same way.
so,I set up my rig.100 pound mono througjh the tennis ball,barrel swivel
on each end,tied to that is 8 feet or so of 50 pound mono with a 6 inch
sea-shad on a 3/4 oz leadhead and blue backed shad.
first sling I let it drift out to te area and let it hang in the eddy.
I cannot see it well but see the wake the ball is making.
I am holding the rod and looking around and wham!,,I get hit hard.I set
the hook and wind in a fat schoolie about 6 pounds.
I actually felt it more than saw the ball go down.
after thtat I missed 1 fish,my mistake not paying attention.
I get it again and the line was tight,no slack,I hit it hard and dragged
in a fat fish about 26 inches.

now I can see the ball better.
I drift out again and the second it set up near the eddy,the ball
sinks.I swing and miss,I drop the rod and the ball goes south again.I
hit it and brought in a small fish all of 16 inches,I don't know how he
got to the hook.

I drift out again and while it was getting close to the spot the ball
bounces,must have been a hit.
I didn't swing on it.
it got into position and BAM!,I have a fattie on again,it got off while
I was dragging it in.

it was crazy,as it got lighter out they started to hit faster,I was
getting hits while it was drifting out,,,I ended up with 4 small bass
landed and missed 2 or so with 1 that got off on the way in.

once it got light out I saw a few fish breaking and soon after that they
stopped.tide was still strong but,they stopped.
I headed for a stack of flapjacks,,,
had fun,nice weather and cool temps.
I can't wait till the end of this week to do it out front on the mud
flats.

Some bluefish are finally showing on the edges in the Sound. From the feedback I'm getting it's been a tough bluefish year for shore fishermen in LI Sound. Blues always out of reach, slamming the bunker, at the harbor mouths, or out in deep channels, where surf guys can't touch them. Must be frustrating as hell. :burn:

got OTW at 5:45,tide low but,still ebbing good.
head out front.
in hand I have a new Quantum mOcean casting surf stick,9 ft. med. heavy
power mated to an Omoto Hubilie 777-a3[black]
I put on one of my newer unfished pieces,a 10 inch super-60 in light
grey/chartreuse stripe.
I sling it out and allow it to to drift waay out in the current.
after a while of drifting and letting it hang out there it gets light
out,enough to se good.
I am watching my plug dance around on top and I see a fish behind it
smash at it but,it does not grab it.
I reel it away from the fish and nothing.I reel in and cast again and do
the same thing.
as it eases out of the current I begin to reel it back slow,on top.
I see something coming from behind,,smash,a fat but,small chopper slams
the plug and it's trying to take it with him.
I lean back on him and bring him to shore,it's only like 6 pounds or so
and I could not believe it slammed a plug so huge but,it was on there
and didn't shy away.

popped the cherry on my new stick.got to feel it with a fishy loading
it.

anyhow,now it's daylight now,I switch to my 7 inch horse bunker done in
rosy gold paint that I mixed up with gold dust.
sling that out a few times and then as it was in the middle of the
current on top,it gets hammered by a better sized fish.
the single,dressed tail hook got him but,the middle and front hook latch
on to his side.
it's coming in sideways so it feels heavy
I can see the fish and it cannot take any line.
I land it and take shots of it and release it.

Had fun,cool weather,no crowds and yes,I am smiling ok!

Got OTW at 5:30,cold outside,my thermo read 43 on my porch.
by the water it was about 8 degrees warmer.
fished out front.
saw a few smashes once it got a little light .

tide was down with low tide at 7:14.
I put on a brand new swimmer,one of my little tunnys at 9 inches.
took the new rig out,quantum mOcean with a shimano calcutta 700-B
sitting on top,200 yds of 30 mono on it.
sling this brand ne swimmer across the current,let it drift waay out
there,it is still a bit dark but I can see the wake from my wood
working.
I engage the reel and let it dance out there.
SMASH!,,I lay into a fish and it's dancing all over the top heads to the
right into the heavier current.
i hold it fast,no drag at all.
then the fish turns and heads left,toward the weaker side of the
current,I bring him in and it's a chopper all of 7 pounds or so.
the smaller sized tail treble[2/0] has him in the corner and the
larger[3/0] treble has him on the face.
So,I caught wit the new rod,new reel,new line and new plug on the first
cast,great,,

i fished outside for a good while with no more looks,I headed in
back.put on another smaller new piece and slinged that for a while,I got
chomped but from the teeth marks it was in a space where I could not
hook it,dammned thing hit the plug on it's back.
so,it was bright out,no action,I headed for the road.

so,till next time,,,,,,

Got OTW at about 8-pm,tide was ebbing.
very quiet and no bait around.
Had my wife with me to practice her fishing skills.
her stick is an old but,new daiwa Regal-Z-Strike spinning rod with a
stingray aqua-40 saltwater reel on it. quite a nice setup.

we casted small wood and rubber for like 2 hrs.once the tide reached
it's middle and slowed a bit did I get a hit.
I took a short break to pee and lit a cigar then checked my line for
frays.

Suddenly,my wife cries "Honey,,,oh my god!,,I got him,I got him."
I spin around to see the rod bent over,her leaning over and drag
slipping.
I tell her to take it easy,let the rod beat the fish.
she puls up and reels down,doing a great job.
she slides the fish up the landing chute and she has it.
I was impresse,Sandy did a great job of it and was smiling wide!
I must admit,I had gotten bummed that she didn;t get anything and that
she would not get any this year.Now she has.

Later I got a total of 4 fish and suddenly,she is leaning back,rod bent
and drag slipping,she is into another fish.
I was like no way!,,shes on again!.
this fish was about the same and she was shaking with happiness.I was
proud of her staying out there in temps too cold for most women to even
think of fishing in.

I have several shots of her and the fish to share,I shall send them to
you guys.
both caught on saltwater assassins.

I got out early yesterday, fishing a tidal river near me. I managed 3 bass to 25" by crawling a bomber in real slow. It was good to be out there, and even better to feel a pull at the end of the line.

First time I saw this thread, Albie nice to see you had some action on the bomber.
Rip-Plugger has had a pretty good fall up there.
His highlight has to be his wife getting a few bass (on artificials), that was my favorite R-P report this year.

Got OTW at 7:30pm,tide was perfect,water was clear.
put on one of my 5 inch blue/white Rip-Splitters.
slung it out to the slack water between rips and hit a fish second
cast,small fish that got off.

casted a while with nothing doing,went out front and slung out a 6 inch
a-shad in black/silver/5/8's oz leadhead,third cast hit a small fish
about 20 inches.
few casts later had another fish slam it but,no hook.
fished another 30 minutes with nothing so,I headed in back.

Threw the same rubber across to the far side of the second rip,let it
drop on a tight line and BAYUM,rod bends over,drag slips and I am into a
heavy,hard fighting fish.
it was around 8 pounds or so,in the current it felt like 2wice as
much,nice & fat.

I cast into the deep hole and drift for almost an hour,nothing doing.
I reel in slow and it gets slammed by a small fish about 2 pounds.

I cast into the hole again and still nothing.a few drifts later as I was
reeling in I hit another fish,fat and strong around 5 pounds or so.

NOW,I am casting into the hole and nothing at all,I get a bump but,no
hook.
I decide to head home as it was quiet.
I decide to stay another half an hour and cast some of my small wood.
I put on a baby Rip-Runner in white gold with light blue stripe.I
hammered the choppers on it mid october.
it's pretty beat up and I re-coated it with epoxy.

I go to my rock and stand on shore next to it.
I me 3 casts and on the fourth cast,it gets SLAMMED!,,,20 feet out,I
send the VMC's home and it's REALLY heavy,it digs down and heads out
towards the first rip.
I lean on it to slow down,the 666-a6's drag slips a little but,holds it
good.
the fish surfaces and thrashes like hell,it goes down and comes right
back up in an explosion and I add more drag and it is coming to shore.
I grab the 80 pound leader and slide this thrashing monster to shore.
I say "Holy ****!".
I didn't bring my lipper with me as the fish were not so big but,i
needed it for this baby.
SO,the stats are:
43 inches long,26 pounds!

I woke up my wife to take this shot,she was in bed and heard me coming
and made room in the cooler for the fish,,she is so great!

5 fish landed,3 pix taken,will send them in sequence!

can I get a Hell Yeah?????,,,,

OTW at about midnight,TOF was at 9:40.
fish wee breaking all around,one here,another far away as I could hear
them.

using small wood I did 3 fish and lost 1,did another 2 on rubber and had
several bumps.still there are some nicer fatties around,I hit 3 of them.
I didn't do TOF on purpose since the last time the bait was waay up and
didn;'t come out till later on in the tide.

did some drifting and had only one bump so,that means the fish were
upriver too.
will try again tonight.

after doing my radio show,I saw that it was cold but,not windy,it may
have been blowing about 5 mph.
so,I decided to try one of my late season spots,tide was an hour 30
minutes before full flood.I got there and was watching,listening to the
3 rips.
I heard several smashes then saw 3 nice busts.
I had a beat up saltwater assassin that I had to cut the front quarter
off because it was torn up by fish a few weeks earlier.
I just put it back on the same leadhead.it (http://leadhead.it/) went from 6 inches to 4
inches.
I slung that out,let it drop some and bayum! I had a fish on.
to shorten the story,I got a nice fattie that was about 8 pounds and 4
slinkers[fish 16 inches or less].
it got cold fast,my thumb was frozen and my levelwinds line guide had
icedust collecting on it.several times I had to clean it off.
anyhow,I had fun doing a few but,damn,it was cold.
took a few pix[7-8 pounds].

I'm assuming you guys are fishing the tidal rivers? Looks like you have more fish than we do right now. Most of our fish are about a mile off the beach. Congratulations.
