This might be a lame question, but if fish attack your plug but you don't hook up will they try again right away or does it spook them?

Blues more than likely yes Bass it depends on how hungry they are and how well that plug is being worked to keep them coming.

What surfstix said. It's all in the action you impart to the presentation you are using. If they're in a frenzy they will surely come back. Say it's at night, though. You're plugging a rocky shoreline in the dark. Sometimes bass will swipe the plug with their tails before attacking it, to stun it. When that happens I stop, pause a bit, twitch slightly, and continue the retrieve at a slower pace. That often will do the trick, and they will come back with a vengeance.

What he ^^^^ said gotta stop for a second or slow to a crawl with a twitch. There swipe causes the so called swirl and is generally associated with above schoolie size fish who turn to swallow stunned prey . If you keep reeling they loose sight. Many are too lazy to pursue, some won't leave there structure or hiding place and will wait in ambush for the next offering to swim by.
