Why are the difference types of sinkers important?

They all serve a different purpose just like hooks they are all designed to do a certain job.

Basshunter, you will soon learn that they can affect the drift, presentation, and your fish catches.
Fishing a soft bottom, or wrecks, you would tend to use bank sinkers.
Fishing sinkers near wrecks deserves its own thread. You will have to lose a few before you develop "the touch" the delicate balance of being too scared and thus not fishing aggressively, VS knowing how and when to bounce the bottom without getting hung up.
Fishing the surf from the shore, pyramids usually fit the bill.
Fishing very rough surf, you might want to choose a sputnik.

Mix any of the above choices for the wrong area, and you will end up losing sinkers and not catching.
