STAFFORD TOWNSHIP (http://topics.nj.com/tag/stafford/index.html) — A wildfire that began Saturday and has already damaged more than 600 acres is about 40 percent contained today, state officials said.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service and several area fire departments continue to battle the blaze in the Pinelands, which is under control and expected to be contained by later today, said Lawrence Ragonese, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection.
No injuries have been reported in the fire in Barnegat, which was reported around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, in a wooded area on the west side of Route 539 in the Ocean County community.
There are about 20 structures in the immediate area, none of which is in danger, Ragonese said. There have been no evacuations.
The fire has led to the temporary closure of Route 539, between Routes 72 and 610. Officials said the roadway should be open by this afternoon.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
Bert Plante, a spokesman for the state Forest Fire Service, said firefighters were using a helicopter, bulldozers and more than a dozen fire engines to fight the blaze, though some of the bulldozers were getting stuck in the swampy ground.

Those acres lit up pretty fast. There was a brown haze in the sky today.
