Deal Lake fish kill probed

ASBURY PARK — Hundreds of fish were dead and floating on top of Deal Lake, city fire official Garrett Giberson said Wednesday.
Giberson said the fish appeared to be shad and that an official with the state Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife said that shad often are the first to be affected by a lack of oxygen in the water from algal blooms during excessive heat.
He said the fish kill was noticeable at the eastern end of the lake near Ocean Avenue.
No cause for the fish kill was given Wednesday. The Monmouth County Health Department also was notified, Giberson said.
