Cops respond to 'possible drowning' at Crab Meadow Beach
(07/06/10) NORTHPORT - Police were called to Crab Meadow Beach last night for what they are calling a "possible drowning."
Witnesses say they saw a man fishing deep into the water and that he appeared to be in distress and signaling for help.
One witness says she saw emergency officials performing CPR on the man, but that it did not appear to be successful.
A Huntington Station man drowned while fishing from a sandbar off Crab Meadow Beach in Northport on Monday, police said.
Police said Daniel Arnold, 64, was fishing at about 6:30 p.m. when the tide came in, trapping him on the sandbar.
A witness saw him go under the water and pulled him to shore.
Arnold was airlifted by police helicopter to Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.Police said they are still investigating the death.
