MELVILLE, N.Y.-At least three bodies were found off Long Island Monday in the same area a human skeleton was discovered Saturday, according to police and a source familiar with the investigation.
Three decomposed bodies, two of them wrapped in burlap sacks, were found near Ocean Parkway, a source familiar with the investigation said.
As the sun set Monday night, Suffolk County police were forced by darkness to stop their search, which was focused in an area of heavy underbrush just off the westbound lanes of Ocean Parkway in Gilgo Beach.
Detective Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky said a missing-person report was made in May for Shonnan Gilbert, 24, of Jersey City. Gilbert, who he said worked as a prostitute, met a client on Craigslist and arranged a meeting on Fire Island. She traveled with another man there to meet the client, where she was last seen alive on May 1, he said.
On Saturday, dogs searched the area, because Gilbert disappeared nearby and also for training purposes. The unit found skeletal remains in underbrush, about 6 or 8 feet from the road's shoulder. Those remains were of a female, a source close to the investigation said.
After that discovery, detectives had difficulty searching the area thoroughly because of darkness, Pelkofsky said. Heavy rain on Sunday prevented dogs from working there.
Detectives returned Monday, and a dog found a second body, also extremely decomposed, about 500 feet from the first body, also in heavy underbrush near the roadway.
"Common sense tells us it's not a coincidence," Pelkofsky said. He confirmed the existence of two bodies, but said he could not comment further. "We found two and we're still looking," he said.
The bodies appear to have been there at least a month or likely longer; all will need to be identified through dental records or DNA. No identifications have been made, and it's unclear whether one of the bodies is Gilbert's.

This reminds me of Joel Rifkin. The guy would have never been caught if he was not missing a front license plate and noticed by 2 sharp-eyed officers. I think he killed 17 women, mostly all prostitutes.
I read that they found 4 bodies and have a guy they are questioning. I'll bet when they finally arrest someone it will be a quiet unassuming guy who lives in the area. He has to know the area to make it a dumping ground, or else he passes by there frequently. I hope they can get some clear evidence tying someone into this, so the families can get some closure. It's creepy.

I think the guy that did it might be a fisherman, or at least maybe someone fishing there at night might have seen something suspicious.

Or he would have to know the area well to put all those bodies there.

Still not many clues.

(Newser) – The decomposed remains of four bodies found on a Long Island beach have sparked fears that a serial killer on the loose. The first body, believed to be that of a 24-year-old prostitute missing since May, was found Saturday, the New York Post (http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/jack_the_ripper_is_on_the_loose_jmgqHNcLemapHD3HXA P4uM) reports. Three more were found within a quarter-mile of one another yesterday, in the underbrush on an isolated part of Oak Beach, Newsday (http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/cops-bodies-found-near-ocean-parkway-1.2539606) adds.

None have been positively identified, but a source says the first body found—possibly belonging to Shannan Gilbert—is female, and one of the other three is also reportedly female; two were wrapped in burlap sacks. Police are still searching the area for more bodies, and are looking into the cases of other missing women in the area, a source says.

The skeletal remains of four people -- one believed to be that of a prostitute who vanished in May -- have been found off a Long Island beach, and a police source told The Post that cops are now looking into the disappearance of other hookers.
Detectives, apparently fearing a Jack the Ripper is on the loose, are scrambling to investigate other reports of missing women in the area, according to The Post's source.
The first body -- found on Saturday in thick underbrush about 10 feet north of Ocean Parkway at Oak Beach -- could be that of Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old prostitute, the source said. The other three bodies were discovered yesterday.

GRAVEYARD: Cops search Oak Beach yesterday.

One was that of a woman. The genders of the other two could not immediately be determined because of their state of decomposition. The four bodies were "spread over a quarter mile, about 500 feet from each other," a source said.
"They've been there at least one month."
Two of the corpses found yesterday were wrapped in burlap sacks.
Police believe that the same person or team of people are behind the slayings, the source said.
The first grisly discovery was made by Officer John Mallia and his dog, Blue, who were on a training exercise in the area.
That stretch of beach was chosen specifically because of Gilbert's still-open missing-persons file.
Gilbert and a man she was traveling with were known to be heading to Fire Island, which is just across a narrow inlet from Oak Beach, before she disappeared.
She was going there to link up with someone she'd met on Craigslist, the source said.
"That makes sense, because I heard the last place she went to was on Long Island, and it had to be pretty far away because she had a driver," a pal of hers said last night at her Bronx home. Police stressed that the body has not been positively identified as Gilbert's.
Forensic experts will have to identify all the bodies using dental records or DNA evidence.
Cops are continuing to search the area -- just east of Jones Beach -- for more evidence and, possibly, more bodies. The search was suspended last night because of darkness and was to resume today.
Gilbert's last known address was in Jersey City.
In 2007, she was busted in Upper Saddle River, NJ, with three other women in a prostitution sting, records show.
She was charged with engaging in prostitution.
An officer said at the time she been working as a call girl and traveled to her assignations by car.

Take it easy if you go fishing out there. Walk carefully and never turn your back. Most importantly, leave your chicks at home.

GILGO BEACH, N.Y. (WPIX) —
One of the four decomposed bodies found along Gilgo Beach has been identified as 22-year-old Megan Waterman, Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer confirmed Wednesday.

"To let all know ... the remains found have been confirmed to be my daughter, Megan Waterman ... a very sad day," wrote Waterman's mother, Lorraine Ela, on a Facebook page devoted to her missing daughter.

The victim had been missing since June 6, 2010 and was last seen at a Hauppauge Holiday Inn Express near exit 56 of the Long Island Expressway (http://www.wpix.com/topic/travel/commuting/long-island-expressway-PLTRA0000132.topic).

Waterman, of Scarborough, Maine (http://www.wpix.com/topic/us/maine-PLGEO100102600000000.topic), had been working as an escort on Craigslist (http://www.wpix.com/topic/services-shopping/craigslist-inc.-ORCRP00000010598.topic), but was reportedly with her boyfriend that night at the hotel.

Police discovered her body 15 miles from the hotel along a deserted stretch of highway running along the beach last month.

All four bodies were reportedly found clustered, each within five hundred feet of the nearest other victim. The bodies were likely dumped from a vehicle as long as two years ago based on the state of decomposition.

Police acknowledge the cluster of bodies does not appear to be a coincidence but at a news conference today they backed away from earlier suggestions that they were the victims of a serial killer.

Dormer also announced that they are very close to determining the identities of the three other bodies that were found in subsequent searches.
