POINT PLEASANT BEACH — Investigators are looking into what they called a suspicious fire aboard a commercial fishing boat early Thursday morning, the same vessel that was cited recently in an illegal fish haul.
A 911 caller at 12:37 a.m. Thursday reported a fire aboard the Atlantic Queen, a 1965 steel commercial fishing trawler moored at a Channel Drive dock. Firefighters and police arrived to find the ship's netting ablaze, and the owner of the vessel, Alda Gentile, 53, of Speonk, N.Y., asleep below deck, according to Deputy Chief Michael Mohel of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
The netting was destroyed, but there was minimal damage to the structure of the vessel, Mohel said.
The fire has been labeled suspicious. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Craig Ally of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office at 732-929-2027, or Detective Patrick Petruzziello of the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department at 732-892-0500, ext. 135.
Last month, Gentile and Atlantic Queen Captain William Jeffery Stanley, 44, of Brick, were charged with illegally harvesting thousands of pounds of summer flounder and black sea bass.
Gentile and Stanley were charged with landing 2,397 pounds of summer flounder and more than 1,208 pounds of black sea bass following a 10-day fishing trip that ended in the overnight of Jan. 24-25. The vessel was only legally permitted to harvest a maximum of 200 pounds of summer flounder and 100 pounds of black sea bass.
Gentile and Stanley were charged with landing the fish without valid permits, harvesting both species in excess of 10 percent of total weight of species brought to the dock, failing to notify the state Division of Fish and Wildlife that they were fishing for those species, and harvesting summer flounder during a closed season.
Each could face penalties of up to $21,000.
